Day 7 of our 10 day trip to the southern Rockies and we are having a blast! Drove our 24’ Class C motorhome towing my new Indian Springfield up to my best friends house in Angel Fire NM. Spent a couple of days of too much fun with them and then last Thursday we took off on my bike riding to Creede CO.

Southern Colorado has some of the finest bike roads on earth and the ride up to Creede did not disappoint. After a great night in Creede we continued northwest on highway 149 up and over the continental divide followed quickly by the ascent up and over Slumgullion pass at 11,530’. We rode for about an hour and never saw another vehicle and the weather was perfect. At 9% the north slope of this pass is the steepest continuously paved road in Colorado.

We continued west to Montrose where we turned south on the 550 bound for Ouray, Silverton and on to Durango. Ouray to Silverton is the Million Dollar Highway and 33 of the scariest miles in the US… what a road! Silverton to Durango takes you over a couple more 11,000’ passes and is a bikers dream ride.

After a night with friends in Durango we rode back to Angel Fire on the 160 through Pagosa Springs picking up the 64 and up and over another 11,000’ pass before dropping down through Tres Piedras and on into Taos. Taos was overflowing with bikes as the Red River Motorcycle Rally was in full swing. They estimate 20,000 bikes will flood the area this long memorial day weekend and of course Angel Fire and the Viet Nam Memorial there is packed with Red River being just another 30 miles up the road.

We will be in Angel Fire until Tuesday when we will start the two day run back to Tucson and home. We logged 700 miles on this three stretch of the trip. Here are a couple of shots from the ride:

This is the top the pass on 64 at over 11K':

This shot was taken looking south on the Million Dollar Highway about 10 miles out of Ouray:

Beautiful scenery, bet it is hard to keep your eyes on the road. Continued safe travels

Why did it take you 7 days to check in with us??????

Sorry, guys, guess we were just having too much fun...
I’ll be riding up to Red River in the morning after another stop at the Viet Nam Memorial. That gorgeous tribute always knocks me out.

I expected to see a lot of Harley’s for the rally but in the words of General Custer... “Look at all the Indians!”

The picture looking south shows what looks like guards. The last time that I was over it(several years back) it had no guards and it was a drive that made you keep your eyes on the road. My wife was crying because our daughter and grandson were in a car behind us driven by a son-in-law who was scared of heights. What a relief to get to Silverton. Going north was fine.

Very scary road... still

That shot was taken at a pull out/view point and is one of the very few places there is any sort of railings. Most of the MDH has zero guard rails or barriers any kind. The lanes are narrow and 6" beyond the edge of the pavement it drops aways for hundreds of feet.

Add in the folks with huge RV's who think the double yellow line is there merely for decoration and things can get very scary in one big hurry. As long as you keep your focus and maintain your line in the curves it is a serious but doable bike ride. Silverton to Durango is a little better but still very exciting and you have to seriously focus on the road vs the incredible scenery.
