I really like Spam but my wife hates it. My mom used to put it in spaghetti instead of hamburger. It has a great history starting back in WWII for our troops overseas. Heck, I even keep a sizable stash in case the "Big One" hits. A can will go a long ways if needed and they are cheap. The heck with Sea Rations..oh, they aren't called that anymore. makes for great breakfast fried with eggs.

Anyone have a recipe they would like to share other than tossing the can of spam in the trash? :D

How in the world did you figure out that catfish would like it? Makes me wonder what all else you tried for bait! :D are you one of those guys that grabs catfish by the mouth and let them chew your hand up? That is nuts!

I like to fry the spam til crispy, toast some bread and slather some mayo on 'em. Lay on a slice of cheese and I have a cheesespam sandwich. :D

Mom would try to pretend it was a ham. Slice the top and put in the cloves, made a brown sugar glaze, the works. I was little and didn't know any different. It was the food Mom put on the table so it was eat it or don't eat at all.

But I had an uncle who was in Italy with Mark Clark. Spam was not permitted in his home. Said he'd never, ever eat Spam again.

When I was growing up my Mother would fry spam and chop it up and mix in with macaroni and tomatoes and red beans. She called it slumgullion. It sure was good.

I love spam musubis! And spam and eggs for breakfast. Also cup of noodles with chopped pieces of spam lol

I am here: http://tapatalk.com/map.php?dbe3ku

I'm with you on the spam musubi - we also called it "spushi". A SGT with the 412th Engineers over in Afghan made it for us and I absolutely loved it, got my wife to send us supplies from the East Coast - a quicker trip for sushi rice and seaweed paper to Kabul than from his home in Hawaii. Can't say enough about it. Also like to add pan-sauteed spam to noodle soups, very good too.

Still a spam lover. Fresh out of the can on toast with cheese and mayo, or fried with eggs. Diced in an omelet, macaroni or mixed with shredded potatoes and cheese in a pita.

Part of my original survival plan, case of spam and a thousand rounds. ;)

A national dish

IIRC, Guam natives are in love with the stuff. Our troops in WWII had more than they wanted, as mentioned eariler. I suspect that SPAM is an acronym for Sliced Pressed Ham. I can see if you never had it and then the stuff became very available, it might just be better than fish, coconuts, taro root, and yams. If somebody has better information, please correct me.

Grilled span sandwich's were a staple for me Many years ago.
Same here H Richard, dad was a 20 year Marine and we grew
up on bologna and spam. Don't believe i ate my first steak til'
i was 18 yrs old. With what they paid dad, my 2 brothers and mom and I we're lucky we had that. We all made it through
the tough times and we're thankful. We never went hungry but i'll not eat spam to this day.

I usually just heat it up in a skillet and serve with two (usually canned) vegetables and Dijon mustard.

But now that it's been mentioned, I may try the spam and eggs route, too. I know it's a classic.

I have a Spam story: Some years ago, the cans of smoke-lavored Spam had a scene with Spam and eggs frying in a skillet in a woodsy setting. By the skillet was a Randall Model 3 knife, the usual version with leather handle and aluminum butt cap. Six-inch blade.

I thought there might be a good story behind that, as an ad studio usually wouldn't have a Randall benchmade knife to photograph. So, I contacted Hormel (Spam's maker) and W.D. Randall, Jr., who was then still living. I got a good article from the effort. Bo Randall told me that the knife belonged to the project's asst. photographer, who just happened to like good knives. He chose the Randall because it suited the scene perfectly. But he got nothing extra for the loan of his knife, and Hormal sent Randall quite a few empty cans of the Spam. He eventually gave them away.

Some of you may have read my story in, Knife World. Gosh, that was further back than I thought.

Smoke-flavored Spam no longer uses that scene on the can, but I do eat a fair amount of Spam, usually the sort with 25% less fat and salt. It probably has more preservatives than are really good for you, but if one doesn't overdo, it should be okay. It beats starving if your meat budget is limited!

My son said that the natives on Guam eat a lot of Spam, and I hear that it's popular in Hawaii, where the natives have some interesting recipies for it. I was told this by a girl from Georgia (not the US state), who looked up Spam when I mentioned it, as she wasn't sure what it is. Once she saw photos, she realized that they have a similar canned meat product there.

This topic appealed to me. I think I'll go heat up some Spam, with Ranch Style beans and some potatoes or spinach. Yum.

Which wine goes well with Spam? I suspect that a good Gewurztraminer or a Sauvignon blanc, or Chardonay. The French often serve white Burgundy (Chardonnay) with ham products. It's pretty salty, though. That's hard to get past.

ADDED: I was typing this as another member posted about the Guam connection. My son was there maybe 12 years ago, and they were still eating it a lot. But I feel sure that member mwtdvm is correct; they've probably been eating it since WW II.

I would think discontinuing the eating of it might actually help prevent the "Big One" from hitting!

Oh, and I love spam & cheese on toasted english muffins. :D:D

We still eat Spam on occasion. In fact, for the longest time my kids called it canned bacon! Slice the Hickory Smoked Spam thin and fry like bacon, served with rice. Mmmmmm.

little bar near a buddy's work had spam on the menu, and knowing the cook, ended up with this..............

fried spam on grilled italian with onion and Frisch's Big Boy tarter sauce

Well..you are from WA so I take it that ya know what the "Big One" is. It's not a big poop...it's the big 8 or 9 on the rector scale(earthquake) and all stores are closed or sold out within an hour or two. If ya need something to eat....just let me know...cause I'll have a ton of SPAM to share! :D
