If I had no more confidence in my pistol/mag combo than some of you seem to have, I would never carry a semi-auto. I carry a Ruger Light Weight Commander. I have a half dozen magazines with 100-plus rounds through them, without a failure. I shoot only 230 grain Hardball, which, in my opinion, alleviates about 75% of magazine problems.
I keep extra loaded mags handy, in my vehicle, on the shelf at my place of work, but not necessarily on my person.
Understand, if I were a LEO, I would carry some kind of high-cap pistol with a couple of extra magazines. Since I'm not, I believe eight rounds of .45 hardball will get me out of most any situation I might find myself in. I know, I know, someone will say, "Well what if blah blah blah.?" Well, I guess if blah blah blah happens, I'm just out of luck.
I could wear body armor, and a crash helmet when driving my pickup.
I do have extra ammo available in my vehicle when traveling, whether speed loaders or magazines. If I stay overnight, I'll take a mag or speed loader in the room.
