Back in the 60's when the county fairs all had 22 rifles at the shooting gallery, the hawker told me about the ammo which was design to splatter on contact with most anything solid. I asked around about this a couple years ago and no one was old enough to even remember the shooting galleries. I wanted to get some spatterless 22 ammo to shoot snakes that crawl up on the rocks at the lake.

Well, I finally found some a the local gunshow today. But now they are collector items.

Frangible Ammo

This product might meet your needs, CCI Short Range Green .22 LR ammo with a 21-grain bullet made from compressed copper powder in a polymer matrix.
A couple of disadvantages, $5-$6 per box, and generally won't cycle action of semi-autos.

Remington was probably the last producer of the "spatterless" ammo. the demise of portable shooting galleries at fairs brought an end to the ammo. I believe they stopped production around 1980. Most of the low power loads available today will bounce but possibly some of the newer non-toxic stuff might be safe. 22 shotloads are still available but they work best out of handguns. Rifles spin the shot too much and the old smoothbore 22's have become collector items (with prices to match!)
