Speaking of haircuts, who goes to a real barber?

Not wanting to hijack a thread, I got to thinking...how many nowadays actually go to a real barber. I'm not talking about a stylist, a cosmetologist, or a coiffure. I'm talking about a real, honest-to-gosh barber!

I live in a community of 1200 people. The only barbershop in town is Bob's Barbershop. Bob is adamant that he only cuts men's hair.

He still uses a straight razor and hot lather to shave the back of your neck. He still gives hot towel shaves. And he still liberally slathers you up with bay rum when you're finished in the chair.

Bob keeps me updated on all the local news and happenings, as well as such hot topics as the best type of corn to plant, fertilizer to use, or best way to stop critters from getting into the chicken coop.

Some folks come over to Bob's just to chat...or they'll stay there after their haircut, chatting with the others who are either getting their haircut or are waiting their turn.

So...are barbershops a thing of the past? Who still gets a haircut from a real barber?

I still use a barbershop. The wife got me to go with her to her "stylist" once. I've been seeking redemption ever since.

I went to real barbers until about 15 years ago. Basically I was paying about $20 for them to cut my hair, such as remained, very short. I decided to buy an electric clipper and let my wife do the deed. It is a lot cheaper.

But I do miss the barbershops of my youth, where men would gather to shoot the breeze, read magazines, smoke and such in the absence of women.

There's a few old fashion Barbers around here or so that's what they call themselves. I wouldn't know, I ain't had a hair cut in years.

I do, and just did, and to top it off, my Barber is also named Bob!

Bob has been my Barber for about 25 years now......

I go to the one real barber in town after winter for my dewinterizing but in the summer I do it myself with clippers.

Well, I do. I use any of several at that shop near me, most women.

For about 14 years, a different woman cut my hair. I went to her initially when I looked through the door of her shop while en route to a UPS store next door. She was wearing a pair of green shorts and had hot legs up to the stratosphere. I changed barbers right then! Alas, I can no longer afford her services and parking is hard to get where she now operates.

She's a stylist and does only about 20% of her business with men. But I followed her through four shops, two of which she managed. She married a Dallas cop, and they have a couple of great kids. We used to show one another our kids' photos, and I knew her elder daughter from a prior marriage. She was modelling her way though college. I'd post her photo (and her mom's) but she specifically asked me not to do that. She's a little afraid of the Net, probably with cause.

I have gone to Chuck's barbershop once a month for the past twenty years. It's understood that I will wash my own hair when I shower in the morning. I don't have to tell him how I want it cut...he already knows. Straight razor to sideburns and nape of neck using warmed lather. No bay rum or hot towels. Just a haircut and pleasant chat about what's going on in the neighborhood, Harley's and firearms. All of this for eighteen dollars plus tip.

I still go to an old fashioned barbershop in Brooklyn, NY. It's the place where I got my first haircut (outside my home) 50 years ago. Same deal: hot lather, straight razor, witch hazel, hot towels and unsolicited commentary on everything from politics to global economics!

I used to, but eventually I got tired of waiting while the barber talked about what crops to plant, what fertlizer to use, and how to keep critters out of the chicken coop.

Now I go to great clips. Inexpensive, quick and quiet.

I still go to a real barber, but I could probably get by with just a new washcloth and a bar of soap.:(

Taking myself and the boy once a month to even the cheap chain place was $30 just to buzz both of us with a #2 or 3 so we bought a $30 tripper from Target. I just stand in the tub once a week now and run it over for a couple minutes and then shower the hair away.

I don't go to a barber, etc. to have my hair cut-my wife's been doing it
for 23 years(married 25 years this March)and she does a fine job-even with
no formal training.

Bob's only twelve bucks plus tip. I guess some don't like the chatting. But for twelve bucks and a tip, I not only get a great haircut, but a lot of good information, too.:) What more could you want?

Pete's Barber Shop. My son had never had his hair cut anywhere else until he was 19 or 20. My wife gets her hair cut there as well although they don't cut many other women's hair. I see old friends & neighbors there & get the news on those I don't run into.

I'm about there myself.

The main reason I still go to the barbershop is that it's a good source of information,
things like, what crops to plant, fertilizers to use, and most important,
how to keep those darn critters outta my chicken coop. ;) :)
