I just picked this model 17-6 up. 4" barrel with a full under lug. Looks like a 686 except in .22 lr. The grain in the grip is incredible.

Does anyone know much about these? When they were made? Were they a special run?

Thanks for the help.

According to Supica & Nahas, SCS&W III, the M-17-6 was introduced as a standard production item in 1990. It was equipped just like yours, Patridge front sight, combat grips. Some early 17-6's were made with a standard barrel (no full underlug). Discontinued in 1995. It was replaced by a 10 shot 17-7 with an aluminum alloy cylinder.

Nice gun!

The 10 shot 17 is actually a dash 8, ser. no. CAB6XXX with 6 inch full lug barrel, and Hogue grips.

The following 17-6 variations that I am aware of.
17-6 BDZ6XXX standard 6 inch barrel, magna stocks
17-6 BEF3XXX 4 inch heavy barrel, magna stocks
17-6 BFN9XXX nickel, 6 inch full lug barrel with red post front sight, target stocks (12 gun set)
17-6 BEF0XXX 8 3/8 inch full lug barrel, combat stocks
17-6 BHN1XXX 6 inch full lug barrel, combat stocks

Does anyone know if a .22 mag was ever made with this configuration? I believe it would be a model 48. 4" full lug barrel?

I'd love to have a mate to this revolver in 22 magnum.

No, there never was. There was a stainless steel full underlug barrel .22 WMR made, the Model 648, but the book says that there were just 6 inch versions.

I have an identical gun,a 17-7,made in 1994.Four inch,full lug,combat grips.Regular production, not a special run.

I've got one of the 17-6 4" NON underlug bbl guns. Always wanted to know exactly how many of that configuration were made.

RCD567...Very nice acquisition!!

And those are even rarer.Lugless, but with a heavier barrel than an 18.
Missed out on one a few years ago. :-(
