This is not a "Special Order" number

99% of the time that number is the date of manufacture of the firearm.

The first digit is the last digit of the year while the remaining three are the Julian date of the year.

This does presume that you know what Decade the firearm was made in.

The special order code is almost always the Julian date for the date of manufacture. The first number represents the year and the last 3 represent the day of the year.
For example a special order code on a revolver from the 1990s that is 6237 would be made on the 237th day of 1996.

It's not on the old labels. I think S&W started doing it sometime in the 1990's. This one is from the 159th day in 2000.

There ya go, I learned something else here today! I was planning on calling S&W to find out when my "new to me" 3913NL was released. Now I don't have to. It was November 2nd, 1994. Thanks guys!

It's not on the newest labels either. New S&W box have neither a Product Code or a Spec. Ord. number. The P.C. is now called the "sku" and the date code is sort of floating off by itself - to the right of the barrel length. Within the last year S&W has done away with the S.O.#/Julian date code and is just putting a straight calendar month/day/year date on the label.
