Speed Six

I had this revolver for several years before my sister decided she needed a magnum for SD, and so she contacted me and I gave it up on a loan. A week ago, in light of recent events and advancing age and realization she was no longer the sharpshooter she never was, she decided she wanted a shotgun. The Speed had more bite than she found comfortable for a 79 year old smallish woman especially with .357 loads. So me again, and the shotgun I have/had is a S&W 3000 which I think is good for a elderly woman, with a bit of training as to function. So I gave her the shotgun in exchange for my sorely-missed Speed. She could care less about shooting, but wanted something for someone who doesn't care about shooting. Here's my excellent revolver, safe at home and cleaned. We both are happy.

Those fixed sight Rugers are really cool. My late wife left me a Ruger Police Service Six that will go to my kids when I'm gone. Lots of Speed Sixes had shorter barrels so that 4 inch you have is really neat. Thanks for putting the picture on here. It brings back fond memories of the time when 99% of law enforcement carried a revolver (or two).

Have you actually handled a Security or Speed Six? Pretty much K frame size and (usually) fits the same holsters.

I find the Speed Six very comfortable for carrying, of course I use a good holster, and it's mu=ch easier to use and control than a J frame.

And, mine is very manageable with the T-Grip and either the stock grips or the Stags

I weighed my Speed and compared it to my Model 65 S&W. The Smith is a 3", weighed 32.7, the Speed Six is 4" and weighed 34.3. That's 1.7 oz. more, how much of this is barrel I don't know. Plus, the Ruger barrel has the ejector rod completely shrouded which adds a bit of weight, the 65 does not.

The Six does feel a bit heavier, which it is, but I wouldn't say it's clunky. Dimensionally, the frame on the S&W is a bit thinner and so is the cylinder. But you can put one gun on top of the other and they're just about a match, so not that much bigger.

For carry, I doubt I'd notice the difference. Both are great carry guns, fixed sights, which I prefer (strangely) for carry revolvers.

I have a Redhawk 5" or 6", can't remember, and it is big and clunky, but I kinda like that in a .44 Mag.

I bought my Speed-Six a long time ago and it quickly became one of my favorite "using" guns. First it became my truck gun, woods walker, & camp gun. Today it stays in my desk....but is still what I grab if hiking in hot humid weather or going canoeing. The trigger is light and crisp and it's accurate for a snubby.

I really like mine.

Mine is a Service Six. Looks like we are thinking along the same lines. My Stag grips were made a bit thicker than stock grips to mediate some of that recoil when shooting full house .357's ... She is a keeper.

Wow! Polished bright. Is the barrel a replacement .38 Special or a special order? I thought they all were .357.

I've had a variety of guns in the double action Six line, but the only one I have hung onto is my Speed Six in 9mm/.357

I have no idea how many they made with both cylinders, but I've always thought it was a pretty cool gun.

No; It's dead stock although I did polish it a little; added the Collins Stags and the T-grip. It is a Model GS82. Caliber 38 Spl +P Shipped In 1977 in the old Red and Black Box.

Security, Service and Speed Six's were available in .357, .38 Spl (Rarer) and 9mm (very desirable) , They also made some for overseas orders in .380 Rimmed or .38/200 (The old .38 S&W )

I wish the finish was a little better but I got this Police Service Six in 38 special for a very good price. If I remember correctly the serial number dates this to 1977ish. It probably needs a Tyler T.

Speed Six/Security Six. In so many ways the K frame that S&W should have made.

Thanks. I didn't know that except on special order. Looks like a rare beauty to me. Guess it was special ordered by someone or some agency that didn't want .357s. I shot mine with .357s yesterday; does have a snap, but not painful. I'll only shoot .38s, though.

I was thinking the Speed Six had adj rear sights? I could be wrong but my blue Police Service six I had in the early 70's had no adj sights. Or I think it was Police Service. You may have enlightened my account. It was exactly the same as yours, Gene L.

It was my first centerfire handgun. 357 mag cal. I hadn't seen it since I pawned it to my brother around '76.

The Six series Rugers are undeniably good guns, but I always had a little problem with their unappealing styling. Somehow, they just don't look quite right to me. I can say the same about Dan Wessons also. I have passed up several really good buys only for that reason.

I made a lot of assumptions back then being naïve about guns.. I'll just say it was one of the fixed rear sight models is the best I can come up with now. I purchased it at the original Dicks Sporting Goods in Binghamton NY. Back then it was just a one store Mom/Pop hole in the wall store, staunchly pro 2a.

Well, I'll date myself also. Bass Pro Shops weren't that at all, it was Brown Derby Liquor Store on Sunshine Street, Springfield, MO, right next to a surplus store named 'Crazy Cecil's.' That store opened in '61 or '62 and died out in the mid-70s.

I prefer the way the Six series look as compared to the GP100, though I've always liked partial underlugs better in general.

It is a Mixson Leathercraft holster with 9B 408 branded on it. The holster came with the gun. It was in pretty rough shape when I got it but after a little bit of oil and a scrubbing it cleaned up nice.

If Ruger brought back Security/Service/Speed-Six revolvers, I would buy one brand new at full price. I never had the chance to fire one, but they seem to handle very well. The size is perfect. I know the GP100 is improved and stronger, but I find it too large. The SP101 also pretty big for a five shot revolver. But Ruger got the size right with the Six revolvers. I also think they look better.
