Speedloader holder for IDPA

The Safariland speedloader carrier you mention is not IDPA legal. Ready Tac sells some perfectly good loaders for SSR. Remember that you'll need 3. Be sure to spec them for the belt width of your same holster.

Been using the standard HKS speedloaders in the HKS/Safariland pouch for some time. Legal, easily obtained anywhere and legal.

The Ready Tactical holders are good. The North Mountain holder is much better. I only bought 2 because I don't carry 3 loaders on my belt. I load with one from my pocket and use the other two. There is no requirement to carry three and unless there is a multi-string stage with a reload in bewteen off the clock, no stage will require more than 18 rounds.

I also like the North Mountain holders better .I have the North Mountain and the Ready Tactical. The Ready Tac holders are good but its easy to knock your speed loader out while moving or while prone which costs you a procedural If your not loading.Even if your loading you have to pick it back up. { guess how I know}

Thanks guys. I have ordered some Comp III's today from Midway(on sale for $13.49 till end of month).

I use the Ready tactical ones and they work well but the North Mountain ones were not available when I bought mine. I might buy them if I was starting over.

A high primer, a piece of grit or powder under the wheel and I have had to dump a cylinder full on the ground and go to that third speedloader more than once.

Also with a lot of 18 round stages with movers and steel, I like insurance also.

I recently used a couple of Don Hume Pack Six pouches. Of course they won't close with Comp IIIs but why would you want to? They do hold them securely. I assume they'd be legal.

In IDPA a speedloader holder, mag pouch or holster that has a flap or retention strap it has to be fastened / snapped or whatever at the buzzer.

Makes since to me. I have purshased 4 CompIII's while they are on sale at Midway. I plan on having three on my belt.

If I had to dump a cylinder full of rounds I might consider carrying 3 speedloaders. So far, I have had few situations where I would have needed a third and in more than one case the penalty was smaller than a third reload would have cost. If your reload is very fast though it may help. Mine isn't, yet.

I also shoot quite often from a vehicle or chair and have had the loader behind the holster dislodge, earning a procedural. I am not sure whether I can wear 3 for most stages in a match and only 2 when I decide it's best. This becomes less of a problem now that the third (or even all) loaders can be carried behind the center line on the weak side. Also, this is far less likely using the North Mountain design.

That should have earned you a FTDR at minimum.

Wear 3 holders. Only want 2 speedloaders on your belt? Use the 3rd for "Make Ready".

Some shooters will run 2 on their belt and a third in their vest pocket for those times that a reload with retention is necessary. For the RWR you can eject the mess into your hand and insert your hand into your pocket and come out with a fresh loader in your hand. It works out well.

Note "Proper Retention" in the IDPA RUles Glossary: The use of specially designed pockets, shirt pockets, upper vest pockets, ...is not permitted.

Use of the lower (side) vest pockets is permitted. I do that at times, myself, but it is posible to knock the loader out of a shallow strong-side vest pocket when drawing (oops).

(failing to reload and finish the stage)

Agree! (IDPA rules, pg 15, para D.3.)

I've read it. I am talking about having loaded from a speedloader in my pocket and starting a stage with 3 loaders on the belt. There is no rule that says I have to be wearing more than 2 (all the ammunition carrier rules use the word "may" not "must" anyway) so if no single string is more than 18 rounds and that's what I start the stage with and I don't have a "4th" loader (counting the one in my pocket) to load from should "something happen" I don't see how I could be charged with an FTDR. Rare, perhaps, but not unheard of.
