Broke out my 30 yr.old Model 19 2.5" Revolver, and want to shoot waddcutters at the club...will speedloaders work correctly, and which one would work the best...I have Houge round to square conversion gripes on the revolver.

WC with speedloaders is a royal pain in the process. They sorta work if you fiddle them in, but don't expect much "speed in the speedloader."

Speedloads work well with RN, HP and TC. I use HKS for carry and Safariland Comp 3 for competition.
Your model 19 takes a 10A HKS and a Comp 3 S&W K frame, stock #13224 from Dillon (avail many places).

HKS #10 speedloaders will do a great job for you. However you will find that being speedy in your reloads with full wadcutters or even semi wadcutters is going to be a bit of a challenge. For a speedy reload with this setup you need to use either a truncated cone or a round nose bullet so that it simply drops in instead of having to be in perfect alignment.

I used Safariland speed loaders with wad cutters for qualification for years with no difficulty as the rounds are held in rigid allignent. The HKS speed loaders hold the rounds loosely and permit missallignment.

Also the Safariland speed loaders release by pressing the speed loader against the back of the cylinder. This permits reloading without changing hands with the gun during reloading. The HKS speed loaders require turning of the knob to wealease the ammo, requiring changing hand with the gun.

Than-you for all your input....I just ordered the Mod II Safariland loaders, with a case of Round nose lead .38's, which will probably work better in the long run over the wadcutters....

I used to shoot PPC with wad cutters for the closer targets. Id load them with the bullet not seated all the way as a wad cutter traditionally does. I'd have it sticking out about 3/16 of an inch. 2.7 grains of Bullseye 148 gr HBWC, always worked well, easy to load from virtually any speed-loader. I used both Safariland, and HKS.

Speed loaders with wadcutters is faster than loading loose rounds in most cases. That's about all you can say about that.

Loading wadcutters with speedloaders is faster with L & N frames than with K frames, in my experience. That is one of the reasons I used a pre 27 in PPC, rather than a K frame. L frames were not made at that time.

A trick I learned many years ago with speed loaders is that when you grab them, get them deeper into the web/pocket of your hand, so that your thumb and fingers actually extend past the end of the speed loader itself. It will help to guide the gadget into the cylinder. Sounds weird, but it does work.
