A friend gave me a few boxes of Speer .30cal 100 gr Plinkers. I've looked up the loading data for them and I have a couple of the recommended powders: IMR4895 and IMR4064. Does anyone here have any hands on experience with either of those powders with the 100gr Plinkers in 30-06? They look like they might be fun to play around with.

They are a hoot!
I used to load them in my '06 when I was in college. They were very accurate in my rifle and absolutely smoked the nutria and muskrats.
Minimal recoil, accurate, quick kills for varmints - win all the way around (except for the varmints!).

I wish they still made them, I put a bunch of them through my M1 Carbines.

That is good news !

I thought Speer had discontinued them.

I have shot the Speer #1805 and the Hornady #3005 100 gr plinkers in my 30-06.
OAL for both was at 2.93".

I have used
BLC
4895
Bullseye
Unique
SR4759

All did pretty good for 50 yard work but I liked SR4759 the best
that went from 1540fps up to 1600fps with 20 grs of powder.

Trail Boss & IMR4227 are also listed but I did not try them, being gun shy of this mix.

A fun, light recoil load if you get into loading them just fot target work.

I have shot 115gr cast bullets in the 30-06 using AA5744. I have used other powders but like 5744 best since SR4759 has been discontinued. My charge is 26.0gr.

Never trust data on the NET. Mistakes in writing numbers can and will happen so be sure to verify the data for yourself.

I have shot many 100g 1/2 jackets in 30cal rifles
Rem 721 load for 30/06 was 10g Unique
I shot more of them in m70 308, 7gr Unique. This was gallery load and very accurate at 50yds. I used same 7gr load of Unique in my Marlin 30/30.
We called these possum loads. These were practical to shoot small game.
I did have a IMR-4198 load that was a good bit more spiffy. There was a Peterson’s magazine a good many years back that had a good article
about light loads & bullets in deer rifles. Had a chart listing many cartridges.

SR 4759 was always my powder of choice for reduced loads, for everything from a .45-70 to a .30-30 Winchester. I shot many hundreds of the Speer Plinker back in the 70's.

Ditto for me, and thankfully I still have some SR 4759 left. I would think that it would work out well for the 110 grain plinker in either the 308 or the Ough-Six.

I used hundreds of these bullets along with the Hornady 100 gr half jackets while in high school, hunted jack rabbits every afternoon after school. If memory serves me (this was around 60 years ago) I used 55 gr of IMR 4320. Probably running around 3500 FPS, and was spectacular on rabbits.

OK, these are cool! I never knew such a beast existed. Definitely on my list to mess around with if I can ever find some. Thanks for sharing!

I think they were the first jacketed bullet I ever loaded in a CF rifle cartridge.
I loaded them in 30-06 for a 1917 Enfield while in HS.
I wanted something better for woodchucks.

No money of course,,,The rifle already defunded me as it cost $20.
Plus $3 a hundred for MilSurp 30-06. But that stuff just drilled a pencil size hole through the little critters and they seemed to crawl away.
I wanted to buy the absolute cheapest 'real jacketed' bullet available.
Those 110's were it.

I think I used 3031 powder but could be mistaken. Long time ago.
Worked great on woodchucks.

I later loaded them in 30-30 as well. Maybe that's where I used the 3031 powder?.

At one time, the ammunition manufacturers sold very light CF rifle loads in various hunting calibers (.30-30, .303 Savage, .30 Rem, etc.) specifically for the purpose of finishing shots on downed wounded game. Those Plinker bullets, handloaded lightly, are ideal for that purpose and don't destroy 10 pounds of meat. Assuming you have some .30 caliber rifle to use them in.
