When we carried the M & P 45, our agency issued the SPEER Gold Dot round. I did a small amount of research, and found that it appeared to be a relatively reliable round.

Now that we carry the Glock 17, our agency issues the SPEER Gold Dot G2. I haven't found much on it, I'm guessing due to the fact it is relatively new.

I am often amused by the stories the firearms instructors tell us about "how amazing" some items are. I think most of it is made up in their heads, one in particular.

So what does anyone know about the G2?

A clever marketing strategy the industry likes right now. Smith has their 2.0 series, Glocks are up to Gen 5... call it iPhone syndrome? Maybe I’m just jealous, I’m still on an iPhone 6 and carrying a .38 special. :-)

I went to one of those gelatin demo shows that Speer puts on for LE a while back.

It was a Glock/GT distributers/Speer show. I just didn't see anything that screamed G2 is the best thing since sliced bread. To my eye, the G2 didn't do anything significantly better than the Gold Dot that has been around for years, or even much better or worse than a similar Federal or Hornady offerings.

That said, good ammo, pricy, but good. Just not enough so that I'd want to plunk down a bunch of my hard earned coin to change out the Gold dots that I have for the latest and greatest version.

It was a fun day, shot up some free ammo through a bunch of new guns that I didn't have to go clean, and went home with a bit of swag from the companies that put on the show. Perhaps the firearms instructors raving about the amazing new round were swayed by some freebies? I dunno. YMMV

I believe the G2 was the round that Speer developed for the FBI. The initial run didn't perform very well in gel, but from what I've read that's been fixed and the current production should be good-to-go.

As far as I know there haven't been any actual shootings involving this round, so whatever performance assessments have been made have been made with gel. I don't know how it compares with other rounds as I don't really have an interest in the G2 load (I prefer street-proven loads, like Gold Dot or HST).

I will agree that it is VERY expensive and not readily available in our area. When it is around, it goes quickly.

It wouldn't surprise me if some of our instructors believed everything they were told at a demo. There have been times were I knew for a fact they were repeating internet "lore" as substantiated fact.

Personally, I liked the original Gold Dot. Sometimes our agency has a tendency to "believe the hype" and quickly buy/field what ever the flavor of the week is.

I really appreciate the input guys, thanks.

The test showed that the G2 GD ammo worked BEST.........
in barrels longer than 4"............ for the LE, for Expansion to take place.

There are at least five other GD ammo, made for 4" or less, for SD use.

Get it right, when making your choice.

As stated, the G2 is the round developed for the FBI, and when first introduced had some serious problems. Doc Roberts has written a good bit about it. It's old news; I am pretty sure that is has been around for 2 years or more.
