.38 Special, 5 screw, paddle wheel front sight, 5 inch barrel, excellent shape.

Strait ejector rod (no knob at the end.)

Serial # S 98xxxx. They want $450.

I think it was made in the '50s.

Is that a fair price?

Thanks.

Serial # S 98xxxx

Likely shipped Feb/Mar 1948. S prefix production ended in March, 1948, at S999999. The first C prefix was assembled on March 22, 1948.

Strait (sic) ejector rod
This goes all the way back to approximate serial number S8741xx.

Depends on the actual graded condition. If it is truly "Excellent" then it is about right. Maybe a little high, depending on how badly you want it.

Would you please kindly send me the full serial number via PM so I can get it into the database?

Thanks!

I'll get it tomorrow. I memorized what I could! Use my cell phone and I'll photo it for you guys. I have a 4 inch version in the safe but a bit later made. Mine is C 172xxx.

It's a PAWNSHOP, of course their initial asking price is high, but everything in a pawn shop is negotiable.

Recently paid $420 for an almost-exact twin of the one you describe.
Maybe just a bit high, but not enough to keep me from buying it. It looks good and I'm pleased with it.

Well yes folks but... Just got that S&W 640-1 .357 AND I still have a Colt Detective Special, second issue, mint condition, on Lay-away (200 bucks short of paying it off.)

So you guys wanna have me start a go-fund-me? Somehow I don't think that will fly. You know, "Retired Gent Gun Nut needs another gun, please fund me!"

Oh well.. I will get those pics and the SN tomorrow, and fondle it a bit.

Does it have a one line Made in USA stamping or the 4 line?

Here is S/N S900094 Shipped May 1947.
Pawn shop find as well. It came with all the extras. S/N on bottom of Box, Docs & tools
I did pay a bit more than I normally would for an M&P ..less than $600 more than $450 but.. this is in 99%+ Condition It is in the top 5 to 10 of the nicest condition guns I own.

I don't think $450 is too much if it is in excellent shape. Look at sold auction prices...then again it is a buyers market!

The S serial number range transition guns are the smallest production numbers of in all of the M&P inventory as far as I can tell.

It would be very surprising if it has the 4 line address. That didn't start until about May, 1948, and the S prefix guns were not produced after March of that year. In the thousands of S prefix M&Ps I've looked at exactly none of them have the four line address. :)

OK folks! Serial # S 984697. See photos.

Since I have that Colt on lay-a-way SOMEBODY ELSE is gonna get this one.

Oh well...
