Springfield Armory's New Hi-Power

Dang, I need another P-35 like I need another ex-wife but I got to have one, (SA-35 that is). Absolutely love the classic lines of the P-35 and nothing else has the same feel in the hand. I want one, I want one, I want one, I want one.

Springfield Armory's website shows a Concealed Carry as well as a CQB / Home Defense variation in the drop down, but nothing else in terms of specs/pics. I'm definitely in for a Ronin variation with an alloy frame, but I'll likely purchase one regardless. I prefer spur hammers in Hi Powers, but can live with an altered ring model as long as it really doesn't bite. Other than that, the only thing that matters to me is that the front strap is thick enough to checker, thankfully they didn't put the serial number there, makes me think it is.

Nice. I finally picked up an 80s Hi Power this year and am waiting on a list for custom work from Don Williams.

Can't wait for these to become available, especially if there is a Detective size version.

Good thing I already have my name on Mr. Spegel's Hi Power grip list to avoid the rush.

No secret, my love of IWB suede/clip pouches. I already have one for the HP, affording a slightly better "Mexican carry." Only hope this version is better than the brand new Assembled-in-Portugal HP I bought in 2010. Constant smokestacks, plus one "catastrophic", simultaneous smokestack + F-t-Chamber. Of course my FBI buddy had no problems and happily bought the gun from me. Odd, the Nazi-era HP works perfectly, but I do not want to use it as an occasional carry piece.

I'm interested, but would hate to spend $700 for "Assembled-in-Portugal" reliability.

Looks great, I'll probably be in for one! Better sights, trigger, and mag capacity, at a decent price, nice job SA.

Love Hi Powers, I've got two Brownings, and a stainless Tisas...

In today's environment, I bet it will not be on sale initially at the MSRP, but will probably be noticeably more. I hope not. As stated in a previous post, as soon as it hits gun auction sites and gun stores, it will be considerably higher.

I'm going to grab the first one I can find.

Then I'm going to grab the first one I can find in stainless when they eventually offer it in that format.

As the guy in the video says, I am not a 1911 fan, but I do like the BHP and have two, a made in Portugal variant and an Israeli replica. I think I might need one of these, just because.........

I've always liked the look of the HP, but stayed away because of the hammer bite issue. SA says they've made a design change to deal with that, so I'll probably buy one. However, the gun only coming with one magazine is cheesy.

I have a slightly older Assembled-in-Portugal HP that I bought around 2005. Mine feeds fine and I have qualified for LEOSA with it several times. It's a keeper.

There are three nonSA businesses who have made nice quality HP clones in the past. From Argentina there was the FM, which started off as a licensed copy of the Mk-I. If the SA concealed carry version has a shorter barrel/slide assembly, FM could be it as they produced a short barrel version known as the Detective model. The front end of the slide had cut outs like on a 1911 slide, not like the P35, but it looked ok. Second guess is like many here have already speculated on - Tisas, out of Turkey. Cylinder and Slide liked it, as did other custom makers. The third choice would be for the Hungarian FEG version - early on, mostly an exact copy of the MK-I, later morphing into all sorts of various versions, one of which had more in common with a Smith and Wesson 59 than with a P35. There is always the Brazilian connection to consider. Re cast frames - the cast Browning/FN frames were bull strong and were the norm from late 1989 on for both the .40 and 9x19 version, after FN determined that forged frames started to have trouble in .40 S&W at about the 2500 round count. Not sure why SA chose to pretend cast frames are inferior, but they are flat wrong if they are referring to FN/Browning P35s. If the gun is more accurate than the advertising, I'm in. Re the smoke stack issue on the assembled in Portugal new in the box, I've owned and fired a number of BHPs, from 1940 production on. All fed flawlessly. I'm thinking you likely had an ammo problem. The fact that your buddy didn't have the problem after he bought it pretty clearly shows it wasn't a gun problem.

All the best - Dave
