Been looking for a 2" for my meager pile. Just found a square butt sample. How desirable or not is this SB vs the RB in the 2" model? Looking for opinions on the value difference if in same condition.
What say you all?

THanks

i'd say they are equal in value. Smith made target and banana style grips to fit both(either/or) frame styles. I have the smooth round banana style on my nickel & blue RB 2" 34's. Expect to pay north of $5C for any 34 in decent shape.

I agree with Mike, I don't see a value difference based on sale values.

The round butts do seem to predominate but so does the preference for RBs on 2" guns. It hasn't reached the collecting syndrome of the poor sellers back in the day becomimg the high dollar sleeper collectibles of today, anyway.

I tend to like the looks and feel of the 2" SB 34- it is one of the guns I want to pick up as a trail and backtard plinker- but I want a using ugn not a mint collector example- problem is all the 34's I see in user condition still seem to have a collector price tag!

I'll second that.

MajorD & snowman,

I have to agree on both counts! The sq butt has always been my preference. I do not find the mere 1/4" extra length an issue and they are a much better hand fit for me.

Yes the price on shooters is out of hand. I believe the demand for shooters make them quick sellers, more than collectibles and has driven up the price, especially on the net. .22s are just so popular. And then occasionally you can walk into a LGS or pawn and snag one for $300. Just like other models I guess, there's always a sleeper somewhere..

I have the SB 4" 34-1. I gave $450 in trade and cash for mine. Honestly, I almost walked away from that because I can get a new SP101 4" for about $520 at my LGS or Bud's. Yes, you'll have to order it and wait until ??? but then, it's also a new gun - oh, and it's stainless. I can't understand why anybody would pay north of that price for a used one when they can get a new 63 for around $600?!?

You're right, if you have to ask the question, you probably don't understand any of the answers.

But that's OK. This is not a criticism, just the answers if it was truly a question, not a statement with a question mark:

Old world craftsmanship and panache,
value appreciation,
a real quality blue job (not all like stainless),
no internal lock or current production shortcuts,
silky smooth action,
a firearm like we won't ever see made again,
still a very accurate shooter,
and we don't all need to have the newest, spiffiest, hi-tech doodad on the market.

In other words, of course, different strokes for different folks.

Unfortunately , my 34s are both square butt , as are my 3in 36 and 4in 63.

The major problem with square butt J's are there's not as much variety in grips as with a round butt.

The Pachmayr Compacs and Hogue hardwoods feel great shooting, but are not as concealable as a nice boot grip.

Most of us who own 60s and 70s (or older) versions of the Model 63 and Model 34 would laugh in the face of anyone who offered us a brand new 63 or Ruger SP101 in an even trade.

I own both square and round butt j-frames. For pocket carry, the rb is a little better. Otherwise, I don't believe there is an advantage. I believe one will bring as much as the other most times. I prefer factory stocks and a t-grip on both versions.

That's very true. I've had to modify J frame target stocks for this 22 and 32.
