At a shop today I encountered a 629-1, SN AFA 2xxx, with a 4" tapered barrel laser-etched "Mountain Gun" on the right side. The cylinder is fluted, charge holes not inset, and no BP chamfering. The front sight is pinned black, and the cylinder stud is round. The butt is square, with a set of rubber Hogues on it. No box. I noticed the cylinder face was bright and had fine scratches, as if finely filed. The rear of the barrel is bright and square, the cylinder gap on the order of 3-4 thou. Recoil shield looks nearly new. Bore is excellent. Oddly, the left side of the barrel had fine scratches over the Smith & Wesson lasering, perpendicular to the long axis. That one stumped me for a bit.
After coming home and researching through SCSW I've concluded this revolver has had a Mountain Gun barrel installed. That would explain the fine scratches on the barrel, and the bright cylinder face and barrel, as well as the square butt.
No, no pics. Nice revolver, but worth $700 OTD? I'm inclined to pass.
Thoughts, opinions, new theories???
