Square Butt J Frames

I had a nickel Model 36 square butt. Very pretty gun. I bought it from a former OK LEO for $125.00. Long ago and far away as we say. I gave it to a friend a long time ago, too. Never really warmed up to it although I carried it a lot in a secret compartment of a briefcase that was modified for the purpose.

Wow, that must have been fun at the airport metal detector! And I always thought they gave me a hard time over my "hidden" Swiss Army knife with the lethal 2.5" blade...:D

Pardon my ignorance but is there such a thing as a lightweight J frame with a square butt? I have a 342-1 and several pre model 10 square butt snubnose rebolvers. All the nice revolvers posted here look like steel frame guns.

Yes, the Model 37 came in square butt. Here is mine (at 2 o'clock) with a few buddies.

3 in hand plus an "imposter"

I also like the SB J frames. Like others...fits my hand a tad better and gives better control for me.

The Model 31-1 (1975), the Model 36-1 blue (1976) and the Model 36-1, nickel (1982), are all SB.

The "imposter":D is the Model 34-1 (1972)....22LR...looks, and acts like a SB but is a RB wearing some factory wood "conversion" grips.

Like em all....nice clean shooters, can be easily carried in OWB leather for comfortable day hiking the blue ridge, local woods, plinking...or paper punching.

I had a 3" 36-1 pinned barrel, from about 1981, sold it last year... Wish I kept it.

i was not in the same place financially at that time, and thought it was a good idea to sell, as I rarely shot it...

I am always looking out for good J-frames- looking at a snubby pre-lock blued model hopefully tomorrow, gonna try to trade in a couple Marlin rifles I rarely shoot towards it... Even though one of the marlins, I know I will miss... A really nice laminate stocked 883SS in 22 magnum.

My wife keeps saying I don't need more guns, so to keep getting new ones, I have to trade some in even though I have the money to buy them. Gotta keep the wife happy though.

I've discovered that sq butt J frames are much easier to shoot than rd. butts. Actually neither fit my hand that well but the sq butt is a good candidate for a pachmayr grip. I just put some on a 31-1 and the improvement was amazing.

Of course I'll keep the original stocks which are numbered to the gun but I also want to shoot the gun a bunch.

Same here.

Have you tried any of the various J-Frame target stocks that fit one or the other butt, or both?

Personally I like shooting mine with almost any stocks even a little bigger than the original S&W ones (although those are hard to beat for elegance ;)).

I looked for some wood target stocks but seems everyone wants a lot of money for those, especially S&W stocks. Pachs are about $35 new and they fit my hand very well.

I just picked up a 36 no dash snubby square butt for $450 (traded in a marlin 60 towards it so not so much out of pocket)

Weird thing though, first time in about 8 years of having my LTC, I had a delay put on my account - can't pick it up till the 25th, unless they call back sooner.

that's a first for me, I have probably bought 6 guns in the last 3 months, and several dozen overall, never had a single issue. And my state doesn't have waiting periods on stuff either...

Shop owner said it could be just due to volume of calls, but he called on another guy at the same time, and the other guys went through.

Annoyed, but happy I got the pistol, and can take it home soon.

Has a little muzzle wear from a holster, Owner said he bought it off a police officer, was a back up piece, and was pretty well cared for. Grips are excellent, no-dash model 36,and serial number starts with "J" so I think it's pretty early.

I remember when I bought my M36 (round butt) new for about $123.00 back in ‘76. Shoulda also bought the square butt M36 in the case next to it (for the same price). Good times...

Well, ironically, about 20 minutes after posting my last post, the shop called, said it was cleared with the FBI and I could pick it up.

It’s pretty nice, grips are great, light holster wear, one tiny rust spot on the side plate. I’m gonna try to polish it out just with rem oil wipes or 0000 steel wool and oil.

It has a J with 6 digits J23xxxx so I guess 73-74

Here it is in all its glory. I’ve cleaned it since taking these and the bluing, like my model 15, is beautiful!
