Wow...had to look that one up and there actually was a model 639 made from 1984 to 1988.
Never seen one and no picture in the SCSW 3rd ed.
My guess is if it was advertised as a stainless 39 its actually nickel.

639 is a 2nd Gen version of the 39. Should be labeled 639 on the left side, just above the trigger and below the serial number. Otherwiase, it is likely a nickled 39.
I love my 639. Very durable and dependable. Heavy for a single stack 9 by todays standards. Since it's so rugged, I use mine for heavy loads, with a slightly heavier recoil spring of course. In fact, I'm carrying it now.

how can a seller mis-identify a pistol with a model number stamped into it?

For a very limited time, there were some aftermarket stainless steel frames made by BII and AMT, but the shape of the trigger guard looked more like a 1911 than a S&W, and I don't think they were model stamped either.

I mention them as since they are rarer than an honest politician with hen's teeth, finding a M39 so equipted would be a real coup.

There is also the possibility that it's really a 639 that's been mis-stamped somehow... it's not as if S&W hasn't done it before... at least with revolvers.

If you can get the S/N, a quick call to S&W customer service will tell you exactly what the beast is/was when it left the factory.

639

Hello All,
New to this forum, but this thread caught my eye. I have the 639 and it is a great gun. I have had and carried it for many years and have notreally needed to switch to a hi-cap.
It was a gift from my wife? Lucky me.

My 639 came with an incredibly smooth and light DA trigger pull. Firing even full power 9MMs out of a steel frame feels like firing 38WCs out of an N frame.

I have one of the BII frames and it's stamped Model 39-SS on the left side under a 3 digit serial number. The frame is engraved and the front grip area is grooved. The trigger guard is shaped like a 1911. It's heavier than a 39-2 but shoots like a dream with very little recoil.

Buy it (the Stainless 39) if you can and enjoy it. Even if it's a beater it will give you a lot of fun for the money.
