The Sheriff of Stanislaus County (Modesto) Ca has suddenly changed his previous policy about CCW permits. He now believes that he should issue them fairly freely to legally qualified applicants who express a desire to be able to protect themselves.

He is in a stiff contest for re-election this June. His opponent, the former Polcice Chief of Turlock, is not a Second Amendment fan and does not believe the desire to protect yourself is "good cause" under the law to issue a permit.

I wonder if the two things are connected?

I'd think that they are connected. Assuming both individuals are relatively equal in competence, I'd vote for the incumbent due to his change of mind. Let's just hope that he doesn't reconsider after winning reelection. Don

I'd suspect an election change of heart. But if the other guy is against, then at least the incumbant is on record. And I'd go that way.

You said he "Believes he should issue them". Fine, is he doing it now? I'd go to one of his campaign events and ask.
I hope everything turns out well for you there.

The sheriff in Turlock (Stanislaus County) has asked that all permits for people in Turlock go through him. And he has said publicly that he considers it a danger for people to carry guns and that he sees no need without a clear and grave danger. But he hasn't explained how someone can apply for a permit in time, that is in grave danger. Or why law abiding citizens can't be trusted with a gun. Local politicians and those with connections seem to get permits much easier than citizens.

Meanwhile, there have been home invasions and many breakins in the area. It's a major drug and gang area.

Time to start spending much more time in Nevada.

Just to be contrary on a Saturday afternoon in Alabama, if the concern is home invasions and break-ins, what difference would a carry permit make?

(Besides, that's why I left California 18 years ago.)

Ok, I'll go along with you on negative. You missed the point. He was suggesting there were 'criminals' in his area. He didn't use that to justify the CCW specifically. Going from the car to the house is vulnerable, if you don't have the firearm till you get into the home.

I lived in that area years ago, and the gangs were already a problem ten years ago. I moved back to the midwest because it was basically impossible to legally be able to defend yourself and the gangbangers knew it. When a house next to ours was shot up in a drive-by, I realized that it was time to go. I had a couple of guns in the house, but as someone else said, what good were they when I wasn't in the house? Packed the family up and left the state, never went back. The cops out there need to accept the fact that their job is mostly damage control after the fact, and let people start to police themselves.

Home invasions and carrying on the street are not the same thing. I'm not just interested in protecting myself against one problem and ignoring all the rest. Either way, a shooting gets cleaned up by the police, not prevented.

I haven't been too close to a drive by. Read writerinmo's post. Fortunately, my neighborhood isn't very dangerous or I'd be long gone. My point was about the Sherrif's view and how condescending and political it was. He thinks law abiding citizens, prepared to defend themselves, are dangerous, or wants to make political headway by saying so. In other words, he's part of the problem and willing to try to disarm the public for his career advancement. Pandering at it's worst.
