I knew there was a reason, besides being a beautiful state, that I liked Arizona! Oh! Missouri too! A veritable cornucopia of trivial trivia! Thanks Sip!

North Dakota??

Lebanon, Kansas - Geographic Center of the 48 States

Geographic Center of the Contiguous United States is located just north and west of Lebanon, KS, adjacent to a pasture and overseen by a friendly-if-nonplussed herd of cows. The Center is a small grass patch containing a 10 ft. high stone podium and flagpole, on which U.S. and Kansas flags fly. A small plaque on the podium informs visitors that a government geographic survey in 1898(?) established this spot as the center of the continental U.S. A picnic table allows you to contemplate the the equilibrium of your surroundings. Nearby is a tiny hut, the Chapel at the Center, which invites you to pray (a bible is provided at the altar; it was open to the book of Revelation when we visited) and sign the guestbook. Souvenirs, a sign informs you, are available back down the road in the town of Lebanon. [B Bergevin, 01/12/2003]

Ooooops!

My bad. My brain is playing tricks on me again! (That's OK, I play tricks back.)

NC

NC is also the home of Cheerwine, a cherry-flavored soda, as well as Krispy Kreme. The two go very well together, especially for breakfast. LOL!

RHODE ISLAND .. The nation's oldest bar, the White Horse Tavern, opened here in 1673.

I was there last night. They really need to clean out the horse stables. They are starting to stink!

Drinking one now. . .:D You know, of course, that the product in glass bottles is flavored with natural cane sugar, while the stuff in aluminum cans is sweetened with high fructose corn syrup.

The entry for "Washington" (highest proportion of college grads) applies to Washington, D.C., not Washington State. Still need to come up with one for the Evergreen State. ;)

I don't drink too many sodas, but I do really enjoy a good cold Cheerwine when I can find one this far west...

An excellent ginger flavored soda is made there in the Carolinas too, I don't recall the name of it though...

Ginger Ale

I believe what Centenniel is referring to is the infamous Blenheim's Ginger Ale from Hamer, SC. If you get the regular hot variety, you can cool your mouth with a habanero pepper. Google 'blenheim ginger ale' and learn more about the South.

President Teddy Roosevelt refused to shoot a bear here. That's how the teddy bear got its name
There are many different versions of that story. Years ago, I heard a version where Roosevelt was on a hunting trip and shot a half-grown bear when he caught it tearing into the camp's food cache. Eastern reporters even then were anti-hunting and they raised a stink about his "heartlessness".

Some politician, who dispised Roosevelt and wanted to maximize his embarrassment over this, had a toymaker sew up several cute cuddly toy bears and stuck them in a department store on the sly, placing a placard with the words "Teddy's Bear" in front of them. His intention was to heap ridicule on Roosevelt, but since this was right before Christmas, the store was besieged by customers who wanted a "Teddy Bear" for their children.

Other versions of the story are that it was an old injured bear that Roosevelt refused to shoot but had others put it down and that Roosevelt actually approved the toy bearing his name.

cowboy,

I'm not sure what you were trying to communicate with this link, since it speaks only of the United States. As I mentioned in my previous post, sipowicz's fact re: North Dakota is referring to the center of North America, which of course includes Canada and Mexico. Garmasters and I both temporarily tripped over that one before realizing that a point in North Dakota makes sense in light of how far north Canada extends.

At any rate, I found sipowicz's list to be very interesting also. Thank you, sipowicz, for sharing that with us.

KENTUCKY ... Has more than $6 billion in gold underneath Fort Knox .

Actually, I've often wondered if there is ANY gold there! I think they [politicians] sold/stole it all decades ago.

ARIZONA .. Is the only state in the continental U.S. that doesn't follow Daylight Savings Time.

And there's no telling how much daylight we've lost as a consequence....
