Steel Challenge with a 15-22?

Shot our local gun club steel match over the weekend. Used my new bone stock 15-22. It performed perfectly, and was a blast to shoot. It gives me cheap practic for our 2 gun matches.

Photoracer: what is your primary ammo????.....best regards Plum
My primary speed match ammo for the last few years has always been CCI-MiniMag 40g, mainly because it is the ammo I use competitively in my Buckmark racegun pistols.
However since about midyear this year my rifle ammo is now CCI-Tactical. They changed the shape of the bullet at the tip to aid in feeding from long magazines according to CCI. And just from my practice I think they are helping that some. Not that the 15-22 gets many magazine issues, except for when they are misloaded and the rounds are not stacked alternately. In that case you only can get 24 rounds in the mags. The dud ratio seems to be the low level that CCI ammo is known for. I have also tried Winchester M-22 which is their version of ammo designed for tactical rimfires. Unlike the CCI it has a black copper coating on it. Kind of weird. The bullet shape seems to be similar to other Win ammo. For those that only want to shoot copper clad ammo it might be the way to go. Duds are a little higher than CCI but not bad. I use it for practice alot.

photoracer is that Winchester M-22 the large brick sold at Wal-mart for $40+ ? I saw that and wanted to try it out but I thought the MP15-22 did not like Winchester or something like that ? ....wvleo

Yes that is the stuff. Has 2 500 round bulk boxes inside the bigger box.
It is about the only Winchester ammo I use.

As for competition I continue to win all my clubs events that allow .22 rifles. Only one of my non-member friends who is about 1/3 my age can beat me with the rifle (he was using a 15-22 before I did). This year when my 15-22 was down with a problem I used my Stag 3G and a CMMG conversion to finish 2nd in the annual Pennsylvania Steel Challenge's Carbine division. It got really heavy around stage 6 or 7. I figure I might have made up the difference with my 15-22. Next big match is the Ruger Rimfire World Championship at the Onteleaunee Rod and Gun club in PA. on Sept 22-23. Last year in New Mexico I made up for a rather mediocre performance in the rifle stages with my then new 15-22 (stock everything) by shooting the 14th best score in the pistol stages to get 23rd overall out of 120 shooters. At the Eastern Regional at ORGC in October last year I finished a combined 13th against a field of 116 shooters. Lately my rifles scores on the Steel Challenge have been beating my pistol scores by as much as 8 seconds. This inspite of the fact that I have been beating the 1 second barrier of the RR Double Tap stage in practice (.89 best so far). So it is not that my pistol scores have been slipping.

I have also tried Winchester M-22 which is their version of ammo designed for tactical rimfires. Unlike the CCI it has a black copper coating on it. Kind of weird.

The black coating is most likely Winchester's proprietary coating called Lubaloy and was one of the first molybdenum coatings. It was introduced way back in the late 70s to cut down on leading with lead SWC bullets in .357, .41 and .44 magnums. It was (and still is) very effective.
