Hello all,
I just purchased my M&P Shield 9mm and, although I have had many semi-auto pistols with a safety, I find that the thumb safety is very very stiff.

Without shooting the Shield yet, I thought I would poll other Shield owners to see if they had the same experience with safety stiffness. I can take the safety off without an issue. It is when you put it back in safe with the left thumb, after shooting, is where I see the problem. It is so stiff I either have to re-adjust it in my hand or use my other hand to put it back in the safe mode.

I worked with .45 semi-autos for over 27 years and have a Ruger SR9, both with safety. There is never an issue of re-engaging the safety.

Does it need to be shot and clicked on and off over and over to make it smoother/easier? What are your experiences? I would rather not send it back to the factory since it is so hard to find.

Thanks

It'll loosen up a bit with exercise, but I'd much prefer a safety that is harder to engage than disengage.

I only really use the safety when my daughter shoots. It is stiffer than some but I think on a carry gun people prefer that. I'm sure it will get easier with break in.

Mine's equally stiff both ways. Which I highly prefer. No worries about it coming off by accident if stuffed in a pocket or purse.

It IS stiffer than my other larger handguns (that do have thumb safties),but for it's size it's better than too soft.

Thank you for your responses. I was not sure why it was that way. I qualify at my former PD each year and we have to put it back on safe before we holster after each shooting drill. So I didn't know if I should have it sent back or looked at.
Thank you again.
Joe
