Hear me out guys- my 12 yo son has a 15-22 that has been simply flawless. He wants me to get one for myself so we can have some competition. He has a PA Red Dot and bipod. I can get the standard 15-22 for a lot less than the FDE version but by the time I add stuff I'm likely in the FDE price range. To make it look different I was thinking about the standard version and just adding a FDE or OD grip and bipod (or forend grip). Do the magpul grips just slide over the current grip? I'm assuming a forend post just mounts to the front rail? Sorry guys- I'm not an AR guy so this is new to me. I can use the $ to buy a red dot. What say the experts here?

As far as the grip, it accepts any AR grip, you take the original off, and bolt the new one on. Not sure what you are talking about when you mention the forend post, but the 15-22 accepts anything that mounts to a picatinny rail. The foregrip can't be changed without major modification, but you can put on covers such a the magpul ladder rail covers or something like that from magpul if you wanted.

The FDE model of the 15-22 comes with the magpul ladder rail covers, a magpul grip and magpul butt stock (I have the standard and the FDE). My standard foregrip has the magpul rail covers (not the ladder covers) that I've staggered in FDE and black to kinda break it up, and I've also added a magpul butt stock and grip. I have less money in the FDE model even though it was right a a hundred bucks higher than the standard model. The FDE model also comes with the magpul flip up sights front and rear, I really like these sights, they stay out of the way when using a red dot or a scope (just put a Nikon P-22 on it, haven't tried that out yet).

i would buy the fde version. i bought a plain one and wished i bought a moe fde instead. it costed me more than the difference in the rifles. the grip swaps out with a screw and the foreend is just rail covers.

Thanks guys. I've been watching a few vids since my posting. I'm leaning towards the FDE version. I can buy locally for $465 + tax or order online and wait for slightly less. I'm impatient!

$455 right now and with the S&W deal, get free ammo. Get the FDE model!

I bought the standard model and added the Magpul stock grip and rail covers.. and that brought me up to what a MOE model would have cost me.. and You get the FDE Mag and sights ..that I did not get

I think I'll be getting the FDE model- but I have no patience to order and wait. Likely be picking it up at the LGS tomorrow for $465 + tax.

The $80 premium for the moe is worth it considering you get nearly $200 worth of magpul stuff and the QD sling holes in the lower. The FDE is also dyeable to a darker color with ryt dye. Google ryt dye and magpul. Some guys have made some awesome looking stuff with FDE furniture, electrical tape, some ryt dye and patients. I dyed mine pearl gray, the sights, butt stock and grip, looked a little darker then the new stealth gray but the mag and ladder covers were a few shades lighter because they are different kinds of plastic. Wound up painting it Urban snake.

It really all depends on if you like/want the MOE furniture. I like a lot of magpul stuff, and have a lot of it on both my M&P15x and 15-22. But none of it is MOE parts.

So for me, an MOE version would not make sense... unless it was just to get the included magpul parts to sell to fund the parts I choose, plus the QD sling mount built in. That's a bit of a hassle, though. I'd rather just buy the stock version and put on the parts that I want.

Either way that's still a good price on an MOE version from a LGS. Enjoy! The only downside to the FDE version is GOOD LUCK finding more FDE mags :)

I exercised some patience and decided to order online. Saved me money plus I had a free shipping code. I went with the FDE version. It was about $90 more than the standard 15-22 but I felt the appearance and sights made it worth it. Now I'm sure my son will want some Magpul stuff on his 15-22.

If you're leaning toward FDE, do it! I went that way, and it's one of my favorite rifles.

Good choice on the FDE version. You get quite a few extras for not too much money.
Swaping out the hand guard is really easy with the right tools.
I could not stand the quad rail, so I had to develop a way to make my rifle the way I wanted it.
"$455 and free shipping- plus no tax and only a $15 FFL fee." is pretty good.
We don't pay any sales tax in Oregon.
You can always pick up a rattle can to make your rifle even more custom.
