Stock Screws

Mike,

The K and N screws are all 5-44 thread but they do vary in length depending on the stock they were intended for. Magna and target stocks use a screw that is 1.150 in length under the head. The earlier service stocks used a screw that was one inch in length under the head. All these screws were machine turned with cut threads. You will find some later replacement screws around that were not machined but rather are a headed screw with a rolled thread, these will usually be 1.050 in length under the head. These will usually engage enough thread to work but will be visibly short. The J frame screws I believe are a 3-48 thread and are normally .900 or so under the head.

Do you know anyone that sells N frame stock screws for a S&W 29-3? Thanks

Smith and Wesson has them. I think they only offer stainless steel these days but you could ask. Brownells might have the blued ones.

Here is S&W's part number, etc for Target Stock Screws:
Part Number: 072630000
Cost: $4.38
Description: STOCK SCREW, TARGET

You didn't say if you have target or standard stocks.

Click link then look for Model 29. Be aware that the parts list is in two columns.

S&W Stock (Grip) screws probably vary more than all the other screws they have ever used over the last century. Each time I think I have seen them all, a new size pops up. Some of them are quite difficult to get and I just wound up making one for an I frame. Not only was the length different, but the threads were different as well. I called all the usual parts guys, and some of the secondary ones as well, and they all basically said good luck finding one. I finally found a guy that sold me the correct thread size, but I had to reshape the head, cut it down and remove the bluing so it matched the nickel gun. Not such a big deal, but finding it was the hard part.

Smith & Wesson's website does list them, but does not specify thread or length. I would give them a call before ordering to make sure the screw they now sell will work on the older stocks. The thread you are after is a 5-44 and the length under the head for the Target stocks would be 1 5/32", A little less will still work but appear short, longer can always be trimmed.

I have dealt with Phil before and it was a pleasure. He's one of the "secrets" I've found somewhat hidden here on the forum when it comes to finding particular parts, grip screws in this case, and the like.

Are the screws that Mr. Phil sells in like new condition -- ie, is the slot nice and straight? I assume they are blued, not stainless (?)

I only have experience with N-Frame Target Stock Screws from the S&W Parts Dept. For a while there, I was putting Target Stocks on everything I owned.

When I ordered mine, S&W only had stainless. It seemed silly to just order one or two, so I ordered a bunch. They shipped them in an envelope, and IIRC, did not charge anything for S&H, just charged for the price of the screws. I thought that was darn nice.

Like I said, I have only tried them on "Football" Targets, and they work fine.
