If your local Cabelas/Bass Pro has your ammo of choice (and/or your firearm), they usually offer 10% off to members (if you have one of their store credit cards, you are a member). The 10% off is typically on Tuesdays.....you will receive an email on Tuesday morning announcing the sale. Yesterday the 10% off sale was for online only...but you could have it sent for pick up at your local store.

Ammo companies will not ship to NY its pretty sad. They do in fact run a background check on ammo purchases which to me is totally insane.

Come on now, just think of all the lives New York's law has saved . . . it has saved lives hasn't it? It's for the children, right?

I believe there is about to be an ammo glut in the supply line. Several calibers are coming down significantly. BB 9mm is almost 10 even and .338 Lapua can be found for a little over $3. Heck, Lapua brand brass is 3 bucks. There are new ammo and primer companies that sprang from the loins of Covid shortages and are doing some significant production. Primers are dropping also.

Nope . Other than 9mm and .22 LR I load all of my own . If I have ammo money it gets spent on components . Have bought very little factory ammo in my lifetime.

Maybe a good idea to have a little factory ammo on hand, but for someone who handloads and shoots regularly, it makes far more sense to buy components. They'll go much farther for the same amount of money. And if you know what you're doing, you'll get ammo that is at least as reliable as the commercial stuff and more accurate.

Many states now ban lead WWs. You have to be careful when you buy them because the zinc ones are not usable.

When the law took effect in NY, I stocked up before the ban took effect and the waste buckets at the tire shops got contaminated.

A little Zinc in a lead mix will still cast good bullets..............BUT ZERO in my shotmaker.......There it fouls things up.

Ammo supplies should never be about money. I just paid $468 for 6 months of HOA fees, $906 for 6 month car insurance and I have zero to show for it. I probably am down to shooting maybe a case and a half (1500 rds) 9mm ball and a case (3250 rds) .22's/ yr (there's some revolver rds and rifle rds expended but not enough to count). I bought a metric ton in 2023 with the Target Sports "Ammo+" membership, boy that'll set you broke. I'm currently buying 2 1K cases of 9mm and 2 3250 rd cases of Federal .22 plated HP's for a total of $900/yr. A screaming bargain compared to other "expenses." Joe

Fortunately I stocked up on 22's several years ago. I've got over 14000 rounds and I haven't shot either of my 22's in several years so I figure I've got enough for the rest of my life. I also have over 2600 44's and can reload them for another 17400 rounds. Now in NY state we have to go through a NICS check to buy ammo. I'm not sure because I haven't bought any in years but I think internet sales are forbidden. Maybe someone here can clear that up for me.

It's not about helping anyone; it's about ensuring the maintenance of power. If you take away the ammo, the guns are useless.

NY is too beautiful a place to move away from. A short distance to PA is an enjoyable Sunday afternoon drive in the country. Lots of ammo down there, plus a few awesome restaurants.

Agree but I load 9mm also so I get what I need to make each gun shoot tighter, I need subsonic also.

I only own two 9mm handguns and both shoot the same Speer 124 grain LE load as well as I do so I see no need to load for them . I got a friend who gets tons of the police department returns that he sells a lot cheaper than most FMJ practice ammo so I buy multiple 50 round boxes every time he gets a shipment . I can actually buy it cheaper than I can load the same ammo. They test it and if the stated velocity varies a certain amount it gets returned and Speer sends them a different lot then sells the returned ammo to dealers as seconds. The difference in velocity is so small I don't see why they reject it .

I roll my own with a coupe of boxes of factory defense ammo for each caliber, Only had to change my trap loads when I ran out of 700x for a bit of time used titegrp. Had to change from ww-209 to cheddite 209 but was shooting, when my friends who don;t roll their own weere sidelined. A gal I shoot with, saw the last one coming and ordered a few pallets of shotshells. I think she is still working thru them. Smart gal, her case prices were cheaper then I can load for now.

I have been casting bullets for 50 years........Since 1972........I know what works and what doesn't.......Zinc will cause all kinds colors on the top of your melt.......You can flux and skim to remove some but not all.........It doesn't effect the melt from fully filling out the mold cavity.

My casting has only been since 1975. I started massively collecting WWs right after the change to zinc began. I DID get some contamination, and as you suggested, fluxing and skimming was needed. I assumed I got it all, and thus had no casting problems afterwards. Nevertheless, I discarded the batch that I suspected had zinc. So, you might be right.

Fortunately, I had a need at the time for a lead weight to level out a trailer, so my suspected crap is now on the tongue in a steel box to give me a proper tongue weight.

More than one way to skin a cat....LOL.

Probably got enough ammo to supply my family and myself for a long time. The .30 Luger and .30 Mauser were bought with prices for $20 or less a box of 50. Some were Gun broker buys and even lower prices.

NY does not allow mail order/internet purchase/delivery of ammunition.
In NY stores ammo background check in place. Conducted by non-gov't vendor who requires SSN. Fee involved. Many delays, Go is good for 3 days since initial query. If you get a Go on 3rd day and don't get back to purchase until 4th, you must start the process again. System already breached for SSN numbers. NY says not their problem , take it up with vendor.
I don't know if person-to-person sales without background check is legal. I haven't had the need to do so yet.

I'm not going to the range as much as I would like, but at 69 I don't do lots of things as often as I would like.

If New York established the firm you are required to go thru for ammunition purchase approval and that firm suffers a security lapse and subsequent leak/loss of critical information such as SSN's, then the Great State of New York is most certainly responsible for your loss. You had no choice but to use the state mandated approval firm correct? Therefore they are assuming all risk upon themselves for using this firm and they should have vetted this firm properly. If I were in your shoes I would put a call out to others who suffered the same loss as you and contact a good attorney to sue the State of New York for negligence and being a party to identity theft. I would also be beating down the doors of my state and federal representatives demanding answers to this problem. DO NOT take "NO" or "It's YOUR problem" for an answer. The State of New York created the problem, not you!

I'm sure I'll be corrected on this, but it was my understanding that the NY State Police was doing the NICS. In other words, THEY were typing the info into the Federal NICS system. (yeah, yeah, what a stupid way to handle it, but it is what it is - double the work)

I decided to stock up massive quantities the week before the "Safe Act 2.0" took effect, so I have never used the system or viewed the form. However, when you buy a gun and do a 4473, providing a SSN is optional.

Lots of gun shops right over the border in PA, so if I ever run out it'll be a nice Sunday drive in the country.

Funny story - I was in Cabelas buying some powder and primers (they didn't put that on NICS - yet). The guy next to me was trying to buy some 9mm ammo and his NICS "proceed" was being delayed. He decided to sit down and wait. When he took off his coat he was wearing a local Police Officer's uniform. Can't make this up.
