Stolen firearms returned today!! Happy early birthday to me!!UPDATE

One of my favorite things to do while I was still an active LEO was to hunt down and recover stolen firearms. Over a 40+ year career I recovered well over 1,000 guns and got most of them back to the original owners. Some of the guns I found had been stolen for over 20 years and I was still able to get most of those back to the owners. The hardest to recover was the hunting guns. I had one thief tell me when he had stolen hunting guns he would look for guys driving 4WD trucks and sell them cheap. The hand guns mostly went to the druggies and many of them turned up in other crimes later on. One of the easiest cases I had involved a victim who had over 35 guns stolen. The thug would throw the guns on a bed and wrap them up in sheets or other bed clothes and take them outside in bulk. I had arrested a punk with the same MO a few years earlier. I found out he had just been released and got his address from his parole officer. As I pulled up to his trailer he was unloading the freshly stolen guns. He served ten years and has recently been released again. I called an investigator I used to work with and told him this story. He's watching him.

Charlie, I will buy a copy of your book!

Congratulations to the TC for getting his stolen property returned to him and respect to the fine policemen in this thread who went the extra mile to see stolen firearms returned to their rightful owners. It's truly heartwarming to hear from officers like you who take their duty to serve and protect as seriously as you do.

May just keeps on getting better and better!!

BATF called me today and let me know that I can take possession of my stolen BHP .40 S&W that they thought had the serial number tampered with.

They ran it through the re-serialization number program and issued a new number.

I took the firearm to the local gunsmith that is authorized to re-number.
He looked at what was done on the old number and thought that it was being covered up with JB Weld or something similar.

He cleaned it up and underneath was the original serial number in perfect condition.

A call was placed back to the BATF agent involved and asked for his instructions as the original really was NOT tampered with, just covered up.

Agent says to engrave new serial number on the frame which my friend does for me at no charge. ( I have done many favors for the 'smith)

BATF agent has me bring the firearm to him for a visual confirmation which I do immediately.

So good to have yet another one come home......now if I can only find a replacement hard shell case like it was issued with!!

The only gun I recovered from several stolen in 1995 was evidence in a criminal trial, and had a case number (or some kind of PD ID) electropenciled on it. How about yours?

I don't think agencies in Montana do that anymore. Was NOT on any of the 6 recovered this month.

stolen gins update

BATF Agent called me yesterday with a change of plea entered by the defendant to guilty as charged.

This will release 2 more of my stolen firearms to me by end of August.
25 stolen, 14 recovered, 10 back in my custody, not in evidence lockers!!

None were used to commit a violent crime, all but one was involved in some for of a car accident or being stopped and searched.

1 was in a drug raid but wasn't fired at anyone.

Thanks for your support everyone!!

Just wondering if these recovered guns already had insurance pay off on them which made the reported owner not the current owner? My dept got jammed up by one of the big insurance companies once for returning paid off property and the owner had to negotiate a buy back to keep his stuff or it would go to an insurance auction.

NO insurance involved.

And how long till u get a safe and bolt it the floor.

In my 33 years as a LEO, I've never come across (or heard about) a gunsafe being broken into. gunurglars don't want to spend the time in someone else's house. My gun safe isn't a large one at al but Im pretty sure it weighs over a ton when it's full of guns

Irmachine can't be moved when it's full without a heavy lifter of some type. As for bolting it to the floor;..nah. t would take a front end loader to dislodge it. Not gonna happrn.

Safe breaking just isn't going to happen. So long as it's a good safe. They're a convenient way of storing guns. safely.

A good friend of mine had his entire loaded gun safe stolen. It was a high quality safe with thousands of dollars worth of guns.

It was likely an inside job. The thieves removed several doors and doorframes to get it. The prime suspects are the man's stepson and nephew who were into meth.

That fellow bent over backward for those boys, work, rehab, help with cars, loans, shelter....
When he finally cut them off, low and behold, his gun safe disappeared.

One of my friends lost his entire big gun safe when someone chainsawed the outside wall of the house around it and yanked it out with a tow truck or something similar.

this is why i put my guns with my parents house in the low crime suburbs the chance of break in are nil. the ar 15 i have with me is stowed away under floorboards and a carpet, and my trusty m&p compact 3.6 with thumb safety is with my at all times.

i try to get rid of excess guns and other precious items and store them in something like bitcoin in an air gapped harware wallet that cannot be confiscated or stolen. seedphrase imprinted on metal and stored underground encased in concrete.

gold and cash are easily stolen too. they take up too much space to bury underground and are prone to rotting if improperly stored.

Yeah, that modern gold is bad to rot away. Nothing like the Egyptian stuff. Good choice on the bitcoin hardcase. I like Pelican myself . . .

Growr,I hope when they find them, they will give you “first crack “at them. I would make the pay for their sins—— slowly.
