Stolen Valor Fraud Caught By Real Veteran In Mall

i heard about this several times on the radio and dont understand what the big deal is.

sure, the guy is a pathetic loser and deserves to be called out, embarassed and fined, but stealing a discount at the mall hardly seems like national news. im sure this scam happens daily throughout the US.

I liked it when the real vet asked him where his CIB badge was. " oh, I gave it to somebody here in the mall"... really??

i just dont understand how some people can go so far to be someone there not, they have mental problems and those are the one ones we should be worried about, hes lucky he did butt kicked by the vet that showed great control

When I was on Guadalcanal fighting the Germans we were taught how to take care of people like that. It was a bit bloody but effective. :D

I know, I'm glad the Russian Infantry there with us didn't let it get out of hand. Now if the Mexican Marines had been there with us instead of in Berlin waiting for the Icelandic Coast Guard to liberate the Chinese held there, the story would have been much worse. Agree?

I get a kick out of watching the fake layout of the ribbon boards on the high fluting brass etc on movies. If the National Defense ribbon is #1 or 2 out of a chest full I do believe it to be fake!!!
At least the number of self-professed snipers and seal team members going to the gun shows has dropped. Haven't heard that spew in a couple of years. Course in a couple of weeks, I will have to put up with my BIL that had his sniper rifle setup to be dead on at 500 and 1000 yds without doping the scope. Glad he lives 3 states away and I only have to see him once a year or so.
I use my old geezer discounts quite frequently but never ask for any military or vet discounts. IIRC the only military discounts I have ever got were the Military reserved airline tickets where we had to be in full dress uniform and BK gives me a free cup of coffee if I go in around veteran's Day.
As for the posers, there are many in the great beyond to take care of their lies.

I couldnt tell anyone about ribbon order for the USA--but for the Imperial and WWII German stuff-I can since I used to collect them regularily.

Once when i was working for Circle K, we had the black tunics to wear. I had stopped by the post office on the way to work that day-and was in a rush. I recieved two 4 place Imperial/WWII German ribbon bars I had ordered from Detlev Neimann of Hamburg. The car I was driving at the time--had electric windows--stuck in the down position--car had no trunk--was one of those cheapo type cars (Geo metro). Anyway, since i couldnt lock up--I took the two bars and pinned them to my tunic--as a way of not losing or damaging them.

Long story short--id been working with Sarge Bill for about 6 hours--and an elderly gent came in and did a double-take at the ribbon bars I was wearing. He talked with a heavy German accent--and I already knew but--he asked where did I get those-pointing at the ribbon bars--and I told him from Detlev Niemann of Hamburg. This guy grinned and told me about his service in Rommels Africa Corps--and beyond. Anyway, he thanked me for wearing the rbbon bars-not knowiing I only did so--because I couldnt lock them away in my car. This guy had been a Panzer officer in the DAK, with the 15th Panzer Division. About a month later, this gent came by my store to buy gas--and gave me the nicest pair of tailor-made Panzer officers colartabs ive ever seen. They were his last momentos left from the war.

That's just embarassing. Made me think of newspaper publisher Duke Tully in Phoenix. Mr. Tully posed as a decorated Lt. Col. and fighter pilot for years, but never served in the military.

BTW hoosierone, that General Order question might not actually be an accurate test. I did spend a year as a TC in the Central Highlands of Viet Nam, but admit I have not thought about General Orders since leaving basic training. I would have flunked your test;-)

Attention-seekers who also enjoy the bennies that others deserve. One of my neighbors went around pretending to have served in Iraq with the 3rd Infantry Division--the "Blue and White Devils/Rock of the Marne infantry division--home of Audie Murphy and also the 2nd most highly decorated soldier of WWII. I asked him innocent basic questions but got deer in headlight looks after each one. He didnt know who Audie Murphy was, didnt know the two nicknames of the ID given to them by the Germans they fought against and earned respect from--and the dumbest answer I got from him was when I asked if he carried a Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW) and he looked brainless when he said:"Why would I carry a saw?" Then and there sealed it for me that I knew he was a BS artist.

He chimed back that I know all the answers (because he knew i collected militaria) and I said--I collect IMPERIAL and WWII German militaria--and I know their terminology better than that of ours--and many of their terms are different than ours are.

I read several articles on this guy and was surprised these pretend soldiers aren't that rare.

I thought the internet provided a make-believe playground for most of these folks but I guess not.

you can only spend so much time in rehearsal before you have to take the show on the road

You should have told him he needed the saw to cut the handle off of the shovel he was digging the hole with.

Heh heh,ill bet he "used" one of those old-fashioned "T" handled jobbies left over from WWI.:)

We had a similar incident with a wannabe soldier at the Canadian War Memorial on Remberance day. Bad enough to fake your way along to get a few freebies from local merchants, but to come out on a day when the country pays its respects to their honoured dead is sickening. What makes it even more disgusting is that it occurred only a few weeks after Cpl. Nathan Cirillo was murdered just steps away by a 'radicalized' coward while he was standing his post as an honour guard.

The interview has since been scrubbed off the CBC site, but the interview of the newscaster who spoke with him is amazing.

CBC reporter talks about interview with fake soldier - Must Watch - CBC Player

One of my personal favorites was a scumbag hanging around the entrance of the local VA Clinic, whining about how bad life had been for him since he got home from Iraq and trying to mooch pocket change from the real veterans.

I do believe that I saved that young man's life by running him off.

Me too, after Basic I figured General Order #1 was "Don't get shot!" ;)

Ringo, On a couple construction sites I worked on the stone mason was a man named Lothar Gunter. He was 14 and a resident of Berlin when the war ended and once we got to know each other he would talk a little about his experiences during WW2. One Monday he was complaining that he had gone to a local gun show to try and find a Hitler Youth knife like the one he had as a kid. He was complaining about the price and said most were fakes anyway. I asked how he could tell and he explained he had worked in a German military medal factory at the end of the war.

If made in April of 1945 its authentic, if made in August of 1945 it's a reproduction. They used the same machines and raw materials and in many cases they medals were made by the same people. Said they cranked out more right after the war than during the war as the Americans were a ready market.

He helper was a Cambodian refugee with scars on his legs where his sister had tripped a mine during their escape from Cambodia. The two did not communicate verbally very well but they seemed to work together great.

Me, I wouldn't recognize a fake soldier (Army) if I saw him. The Army has so many patches spread around their uniforms that I never could tell one from the other. Marines just had rank, Eagle Globe & Anchor & campaign ribbons. Least that's all I ever had.

And here I feel bad for getting a free meal on Veterans Day. I served but during piece time, the only fighting I saw was in a bar!

The real Army guys that I know- also AF, Marine, Navy and yes- one Coast Guard-
They don't go around wearing patches, fatigues, berets, etc.
some wear ball caps with service logos.
It's been my experience that The more patches, pins, insignia somebody is wearing, the more likely he's a fraud.
