I know a lot of you have safes.

How many of you utilize alternate off-site methods like bank safe deposit boxes (where legal)?

If you dont have a safe, how do you store your weapons? Do you just find creative places to hide them?

One of the worst things I did was to research gun safes. Apparently the only ones which dont suck cost well into the $4000-5,000 range or more. I was all ready to buy a $1000 Cannon safe from Tractor Supply too.

From what I seen there are many good safes from $1400 to $1,800 or so. I fought off buying one for many years. Even if you never get hit, or a fire they are worth every penney just for the peace of mind! I used to always take a trip every time I had two days off together. I remember every time I came home I used to hold my breath untill I checked out the house! Now I can go for weeks and dont worry about it. A friend lives next door that has the best alarm company in southern utah. I may get a system from him, but its nice that a guy like him is next door!

Heck, one real fast look on Craigs List turned up a few safes in your area for good prices.

I have an alarm and test it regularly, with extra indoor motion sensors and an external siren. I was actually broken into in January but they didnt get much and no weapons. Just made a mess. I do however, want the added security of a safe. I just have to wonder if they see it if they just maybe come back later with the proper tools to get into it. I saw so many videos on youtube of reputable safes being compromised.

Unless it's common knowledge that you have something really,really valuable,it won't draw the attention of a master thief. The average break-in is committed by punks just lookin' to grab something and run. They won't take the time or go to the trouble to "crack" your safe.

A gunsafe story.

A fellow employees was retiring in a few months to Oklahoma. He was telling us how he had bought an expensive gunsafe. He had it installed in the new home being built. Then he built a room around it with a standard sized door. This was done so that once the safe was in the room it was impossible to get it through the door.

So....the thieves tore down the 2X6 frame and sheetrock walls and carted the safe out of the house, through several walls I guess.

There are a lot of folks that have discovered to their dismay, that a 1,000 pound safe is only difficult to move if you care about the house around it.

That said... OP, a residential security cabinet "safe" from the tractor supply beats the heck out of hiding them around the house.

In a past thread, someone mentioned restoring some old cheap guns to leave in their house as "dummy" guns. Firing pins removed making them useless. These guns were left out in the open in glass cabinets around the house. Quick crooks will grab these accessible guns leaving the good stuff in your hidden safe. I know this doesn't answer safe quality vs price questions but being tricky can go along ways. PVC pipes in the ceiling of an unfinished basement is another great place to store valuables.

nipster...get a safe! There are very good safes out there in the $1500 range. Trust me, when you leave the house you will be more relaxed. Don't delay! A lot of safes are bought AFTER a burglary!!! Skip48

There is actually a lot of overkill when it comes to fireproof gun safes. If I were you I would invest in a safe that you feel confident in and go with it. Nothing like the relief felt when you secure your firearms. Sure takes a load off your mind.
