Strange Memorial weekend.

I saw for the first time since the middle of the covid meltdown shortages of basic goods—bread, milk, bacon, eggs—this weekend. It was in a very rural area but no stores in the county are getting regular supplies of basics. Shopping for the holiday weekend simply overwhelmed the retailers.

Something I have never understood, just like the downturn the country went through in 2008, is you can go to any local restaurant on the weekend and you can't get a table for 45 minutes to an hour. This is any sit down restaurant, no matter how plain/hamburger joint all the way to white linen tablecloth/napkin places. I would think if folks are being pinched by inflation the first thing they would cut back on is discretionary spending like eating out.

Every horse track and casino I visit seems to be overwhelmed with business too. A couple of weekends ago there were no open seats at any table game at our local casino.

I have long ago given up on trying to understand the economy and how or why Americans spend their money.

Actually it's quite simple. They are spending their money on things they have always enjoyed before galloping inflation truly makes it no longer possible. That time is not far away and they see it coming.

Live, laugh, drink and be happy while you can because tomorrow is going to be incredibly worse as things continue down the present path. Until there is a major sea change in DC, the economy will keep plummeting. My hope is that we will then find ways to dig ourselves out of the hole that has been dug for us.

Strange here, too.

Son had a baseball tournament in Ft. Collins. Not something we would normally have the team do on Memorial Day weekend, but we needed it to qualify for a bigger tourney in a month.

My general rule is to stay home on Memorial Day weekend, as 1) it always rains or snows and 2) camping and roads are always crowded with those who don't believe in rule #1.

As usual, it rained and the high country got significant snow. Some pretty hefty wind events as well.

The oddity was driving home from Ft. Collins yesterday took just 75 minutes. That hasn't happened in years. Usually it's a 2.5 hour minimum due to volume, and that's not even on a holiday weekend.

We play 13u AAA. The boys went 5-0 into the championship game against the only other undefeated team. The other guys won, a solid battle.

Each year my wife and I take a Memorial Day tour which involves a couple of graveyards and the Vietnam Memorial in Phoenix.

....

I honored the Jewish tradition of placing a stone on her husband's grave.

I'm not Jewish, but I leave a pebble whenever I pause at a gravestone, because flowers fade and are removed, but the stone lasts at least until it's removed. I do so hoping the next visitor or observer will know someone besides them cares.
I enjoyed your well-written comment, and salute you for your kindness and respect.
