Hello
I've come across an anomaly. It is a 4" Combat Masterpiece that is stamped Mod 15-3. However, it is clearly a stainless steel revolver.
This is not one of the missing experimental guns of 1960. Those were in the K3978xx range. The serial number on this one is K858037.
Does it seem likely that this is a Model 67 that was misstamped as a Model 15-3?
The front sight has a red insert and the rear sight is blued carbon steel. The hammer and trigger are stainless and the gun is wearing Target stocks.
What do you guys think?

Rather than speculate on the veracity of your claim, if you posted some detailed pictures, someone could provide solid information about your revolver. Without them there is only speculation.

From the serial number, it was produced in 1969. The Model 67 wasn't introduced until 1972.

Since serial numbers have been unique within a manufacturer for some time now, it would probably be useful to see how it is carried on S&W's books. In other words, letter it.

The serail number definately dates to 1969. Model 67s didn't come out 'til 1972, so it can't be a mis-stamp. My guess is you have a 15-3 that has been refinished in hard chrome or it is nickel 15.

Plus 1. The non case colored trigger and hammer lead me to think that it is a refinish.

A dull nickel, or a hard chrome with a dull polish, or even bare metal with no finish at all can appear to be stainless.

Thanks for the responses, guys.
First off, this is not my gun and I have never had the chance to look at it in person. The owner sent me photos.
I will tell you that it does not look at all like nickel.
I actually wondered whether it was MetaLife. But it definitely looks like stainless.
I already suggested that he get a letter on it, but I don't know if he intends to do so.
In addition to the finish, the hammer and trigger are part of what make it look like a Model 67. I understand the problem with the date and the serial number. That's why I asked you guys for your ideas.
I'll see what I can do about posting a couple photos.
