Looking at this model 41 at the gun show today. Is this a 5 inch field barrel and are the grips on it a factory grip style or a set of factory grips someone has modified?
Giving some thought to buying this if everything is factory correct. It appears to be in very nice condition.
Would $975 be too much?
Thanks ,Greg

The grips have either been modified or they are some other manufacturer. I lean towards the former just because I've never see a pair like these. The flared portion at the bottom of the grips is gone. Looks like they did a decent job anyway. That seems like a good price even without grips given the 5" field barrel.

You guys are reinforcing my belief about the grips, Just wasn't sure if there was something out there that I hadn't seen before.

Although they are similar to the grips on my 41, they are different. The top right corner of the checkered area on mine is a rounded area and the top right of yours is a sharp corner. I can see how the flaired bottom could be sanded down enough to eliminate the checkering and just add a new line for the border. I would buy it!

these are modern Hogues in some kind of rosewood

a very nice early gun, condition has to be extra great for that price, correct grips can be found but not cheap, I also think someone sanded around on these and shouldn't have. Tricky, maybe offer 875 b/c of grips and see if that flies. I'd love to have it, those early triggers are THE BEST. Love my 1963 or 65 I think it is. Amazing. I also have a 1979 but that early one is unbeatable.

I do not believe Herrett. They appear to be factory grips with the flare at the bottom sanded off and edges rounded.

Compare

I agree with others that the flare on the bottom of the grips has been sanded down and a bottom border for the checkering has been added. Not a bad job but definitely altered. The 5” field barrel looks to be period correct for the pistol but only a historical letter can confirm that was shipped in this configuration. The serial number Indicates it likely shipped in Nov 1964, give or take a month or so.

Thanks all for the info. Looked at it closer today it really does not look to have been fired much.
Contacting dealer this week about purchasing it if we can agree on a price.
anyone have an estimate on the cost of a set of period correct grips for it?

Before buying it - look and price out a set of Factory grips in good condition if you want original. Not that easy to find in good shape.

If you don't care then the price seems OK - but with no box, papers or accoutrements and a sanded down set of grips, - not any bargain IMHO.

At that price, would rather acquire something that had the correct grips. If you can haggle with the price, go for it. Good luck. Enjoy and be safe.
