Good day guys!

I have a 2008 m&p9c. I removed the rear sight today and I don't recall encountering a washer. I only saw a spring. Please help what should I do. I think I lost it. What should I do? Please help. Thanks

That "washer" was there but most likely when you removed the sights it sprang off. It is quite tiny and you should be able to get another one shipped from Smith and Wesson.

This cover (washer) is hard to replace by hand but there is a tool that make it much easier. They have them for $3.99 at Brownells here's a link

The spring plate which goes on top of the safety plunger spring, underneath the rear sight, has been called the "UFO" in armorer classes. It's easy to have it slip and flung off by the spring. (It's also easy to bend the spring when reinstalling the rear sight base, basically folding it over, blocking plunger movement.)

They've revised the spring & spring plate to make them an assembly (1-piece), with the spring attached to a small nub on the spring plate. Makes it much easier to install without either losing the plate or having the spring get folded over.

Dunno if the factory would sell them to non-armorers, but by now they may have made it onto the aftermarket parts vendor market.

Thanks for the prompt reply guys. Do you know any website where i can order it? What will happen if I will reassemble my gun without it? TIA

Without the plate/cover, it would be difficult to drive the sight on, and guarantee that the blocker spring is vertical. If the spring is bent over (hopefully not bent) it may cause undue side pressure on the blocker, which could stick or extend with sufficient pressure. Only one way to know is install the sight and test the blocker movement by pushing in in and out, at a 45 degree angle, from the front. If the blocker moves freely, you should be good to go. Call S&W about the plate/cover and spring. they may send you one of each, or charge a nominal fee???

Thanks bob. Can i just use something similar? As long as it serves the purpose?

Thanks a lot rastoff. What do you use in removing your rear sight?

Well the rear sight on my .45 can be moved by hand once the set screw is loose. The rear on my .40 is very tight. So, I first used one of these:

However, that is sketchy because it can mar your slide or sight. So, I broke down and got one of these:

They are expensive, but make moving the sights really easy. I got mine used from a member here.

The new version of the "spacer" is plastic, with a nub that fits in the spring to help keep it centered. The old version is just a metal disk that fits in the diameter of the striker-block hole, on top of the spring.

You might be able to find a paper-punch the right diameter, and make a disk out of thin plastic, like the clear hard plastic used in so many of those sealed packages these days. Since all it does is keep the spring straight when you slide the sight across it, almost anything ought to work.

If you had access to a hand operated sheet-metal punch-press, steel, aluminum or brass should work fine, even if the die used leaves a dimple in the center of the disk. The dimple, pointing down into the spring, would help keep the spring centered.
