Do you all think that outfitting my FS M&P .40 with a strobe light is a worhwhile investment? I think I need a light but I think a standard light would have the unintended consequence of revealing myself to a BG and a strobe light is disorienting enough that it would light up a target sufficiently without lighting me up (and hopefully not disorient me). But if I was certain I wouldn't be asking. Thoughts? Can anyone recommend a brand?

I often wondered that myself, Bonecrusher. I don't think I'd like a strobe but I know for a fact that I wouldn't want to be on the receiving side of it.

Since I was taught & had to qualify with a flashlight held in my weak hand I'm pretty sure I wouldn't spring for a rail light of any kind. But then again it sure would make shooting easier & the light would always be pointing in the right direction. I don't necessarily need a strobe. Maybe the disorientation would help me not have to actually shoot him if I could get him to the ground, though. Another thought I had is if an intruder entered my house at night I'd naturally grab the gun but I'd certainly want to make sure that the intruder was an intruder & not a friendly who wanted to come in without ringing the bell. I don't know when a situation like that would happen except my LEO son but he has a key & he knows I'm armed. If he needed a place to crash for a few hours he'd call first regardless what the time.

I would have to...

I would have to practice a lot in the dark to get used to the strobe or I would get misoriented and dizzy. I think just having a strobe wouldn't be what the perp is expecting and would help with the element of surprise. I think it would have to be a fairly fast strobe or you would shoot where you saw the last image while the perp has moved out of frame.

Just get the TLR-1s. Normal on and off mode, but hit the lever twice quickly before turning it on and you get strobe mode. I have both the normal TLR-1 and S model and the strobe could definitely have a disorienting effect on a perp.

I saw the hand held lights with strobe feature demo'd when they first came out. While they seemed to have some merit, I didn't think that they were worth the extra cost and the KISS principle seems to work best in those types of situations. A simple weapons light like the TRLs or the Surefires will work fine.

I picked up a tactical handheld Maglite XL50 or something like that, was around$30. Has 3 modes, high beam, low beam, and strobe. I tested the strobe on myself, made me want to throw up. It's definitely effective on the receiving end, but yeah, practice in the dark to make sure it doesn't have the same effect on your end.

After much thought I preferred the handheld as I wasn't comfortable muzzle sweeping a person to identify a target. But that's just me, to each their own.

Good luck.
