Stuck cases

Well now I have 2 depriming/resizing 223 dies down. The RCBS tool wouldn't pull the case on the Dillion die as the deprime pin is still in the way and I can't get it backed off. it is soaking in penetrating oil right now. The Lee Die may be fixable as I got the depriming pin out with the case still on it. A cutting wheel to the case and it should be good. Any ideas on the Dillion?

Oh BTW this is my fault turned out the case was a Perfecta with a off center flash hole and O forgot to hit the case with One Shot and it was supper clean. Both dies are carbine.

have used a tool basically made my own but here will give you and idea:

basically the same as the RCBS,i know it's the same but some times I tap with fine threads, I go a little bigger on the hole though, also have taken a tool steel rod, brass rod and gone from the top of the die, a rubber mallet, a wooden block or brass piece with a hole in it just big enough to allow the case head to go into it, one or 2 hits with the mallet solves the problem. The dillon if the decapping pin is through the case primer hole, take a brass punch, tap the decapping pin, till you can get it to turn...tighten then loosen, having a lathe helps also.. just a thought..


just hit me also ..from some place else...throw the die in the freezer... the metals contract or expand differently....

I mucked up recently, too.....

I don't know about .223, but I was able to adapt my stuck case puller up a size to 5/16" to pull out a 30-06 case. I doubt a .223 will have enough 'meat' on it to do that. Shoot plenty of Kroil into it before working on it.

You probably can't walk into a hardware store and get them, but bigger taps and bolts that would still fit the .223 case are available, just make sure that you use the right size tap drill. Maybe a metric size a tad bigger than the 1/4" case puller would work.

I really messed up on one die and was able to save the stem only by drilling a bigger hole and pushing it through

I tried to stuff the drilled hole with epoxy (JB Weld) to drill, tap and pull but it didn't work and fussing with it just messed it up to where I ended up buying a new die. (RCBS $30)

Some die manufacturers offer to remove stuck cases from their dies.

I am VERY careful now about making sure everything that goes in a die is WELL lubricated. Where I messed up was thinking that some residual lube on a case in a die that had been used with lubed cases had enough to prevent a stick. Big mistake. Tore the rim off.

Thanks I think I am going to take a punch at is if I can drive the depriming pin back enough. Then maybe I can get the screw to go in far enough to work. Freezer will be next then.

Just don't hit it tooo hard...just enough so you can try and unscrew it.... I haven't had any stuck cases in all the years I have been reloading and know it will be a first time..now that I have said it... have done it for other people, just trying to give back...

Thanks Snoops I drove the pin back. The punch and the pin didn't fair to well but I think I got the pin straighten. Moving the pin back gave me room to get the tap all the way through and I got the case pulled.

Thanks to everyone else for their ideas gave me a lot of other stuff to try if I needed to.

Brass does have a higher coefficient of expansion than steel. If you heat it up, the case will become tighter, if you cool it off, the case will shrink more than the steel die and loosen.

Once you're up and running again, try lubing your cases with OneShot in batches of 20 or so. That way you can't forget to lube one and get it stuck. Also squirt a bit up into the die at the beginning of every batch. Makes it go easier.

I normally use One Shot just missed it on those cases. Seams I learn a lot of things the hard way, and who said you can't teach a old dog new tricks.

Isn't there a bad batch of One Shot out there? Just had a buddy go thru the same thing with two cans that were bought at the same time, he figured the firs can went bad and used the second. Hornady replaced his cans (known issue it appears) but in the mean time he got a different lube and hasn't looked back

have heard also been going around..
..use Imperial and TiN dies in .223 from CH4D.. a little costly...but..., I also purchase their own dies and have it done..and yes you still have to lube them ..but the "effort" is reduced and when pulling the expander back through the case mouth..

Dave is a great guy also..
CH4D..makes dies and does the coating...

I love it ...you got me by 8 yrs, 61 here..so if you got baby fat on you, just call me the fat man, cause it's would be just everywhere by his thinking...84 and still at the range, that's great...had a Colonel that ran a range teach me, Hi-Power shooting when I was in my 20's he was in his 60's, what a mean individual, but I respected him, he could shoot, take that M1, and do things with it wish I could, when it came to shooting, he meant business... he had the discipline.. took my M1A and did things with it..talk about focus, now I'm his age, so it's my turn to give back or play it forward, help where I can...
and I still like shooting them bowling pins, getting the .44 mag out with some full house reloads or even punchin nice holes with some .38 wad cutters
