I have been trying "new to me" Bourbons lately and it was recommended that I try one called Larceny. Lately I have been drinking my Bourbon neat in Norlan glasses and have found that the $23.99 price of Larceny is unbelievable for a quality Bourbon. Not saying it's the best I have or have ever tried, just saying for the price it is excellent!! If you like Bourbon and don't want to spend a bundle, try Larceny. :)

OP I'll give that one a try if I can find it in the local area of bourbon operations (LABO). :D!

I have a good friend who loves Larceny.

I think it's hilarious.........He's a cop. :)

The story how Larceny bourbon came to be named is quite funny.

It starts with Old Fitzgerald, the flagship wheated bourbon of Pappy van Winkle’s Stitzel-Weller distillery in Shively, KY. The marketing story, which Pappy had bought with the brand in the 1940s, told of an old-time distiller John Fitzgerald.

When Stitzel-Weller, which is to bourbon history what the pyramids are to Egyptian history, went under and the brands were sold in the 1990s, Old Fitzgerald and its story ended up with Heaven Hill in Louisville, makers of Evan Williams and Elijah Craig.

Then a descendant of Pappy, Sally Van Winkle Campbell, published a delightful biography of Pappy in which it was revealed that the whole Fitzgerald story was ox poop. John Fitzgerald was no distiller, but a corrupt revenue agent who had a knack for stealing the best whiskey.

Heaven Hill decided to roll with the punch, and created a premium bottling of the Old Fitzgerald recipe under the new name Larceny. If you look, you’ll still find Fitzgerald’s name on the bottle, and the key which, as a revenue agent, gave him access to the warehouses.

Tried some George Dickel's 12 a while back. MAN that was GOOD!! Then I went back to Makers and... not as good!!

I do drink Dickel #12 and it's very smooth and flavorful - some say it's a little too sweet but that's personal thing. I believe just as Jack Daniels, it's not a true Bourbon because it is Charcoal filtered. That said, I like all of them. Even though Maker's is a true bourbon, it tastes very similar to Jack.

Maker’s is a wheated bourbon (no rye), just like Larceny, which does make those sweeter and closer to the low-rye Tennessee whiskeys than the higher-rye bourbons.

As for Daniels, Dickel, and the “true bourbon” thing, here you will find the definite answer:

Chief,
You are correct sir, Jack & George are Tennessee Sour Mash, anything coming out of Kentucky are Kentucky Straight Bourbons. Both whiskey.

Update: Absalom beat me to it!! LOL

Chief, Thanks for another bourbon thread. Heaven Hill puts out some great product in the $30 and under range. Elijah Craig,Evan Williams single barrel,Larceny and my personal favorite, Henry McKenna Single barrel. I tried the Larceny and it was ok. Gave what was left of that bottle to a fellow gun club member that hadn't got to try it yet. Any other sleepers out there?
