We've all done them. Young, invincible, full of vigor-what could go wrong?
Sometime in the 1990's, I took my pregnant wife and 3 year old son camping in Glacier National Park, Montana. We had already seen black bears on the gravel road leading to the campsite. Soooo, after cooking our hamburgers
, we were sitting at the picnic table when my son pointed and said "Look, Dad!"
I looked up and saw a buck that we and other campers had seen earlier from a distance. The buck was a little standoffish earlier. This time, however, he was walking right up to our campsite.
I moved forward and tossed a piece of lettuce towards it but the buck was not interested. I then put my hand out (palm up), and the buck came to me and nuzzled my hand. I could feel the moisture from its nose!
I looked at my wife and said, "Honey, get the camera and my hatchet!"
She didn't bring the hatchet, but took this picture. The deer raised up and stepped back just as she took the picture. Here it is-still in velvet. It was a beautiful buck.
Sorry about the photo quality. This is a picture taken with a phone of another picture taken with a disposable camera from back in the day.
I look back on this experience from time to time. I realize the deer had become somewhat tame from park living but it was still a wild animal and could have injured me easily. We were at the northernmost campsite on the west side of Glacier and a long way from any help.
That's not the only stupidity I've displayed. I've done far worse, but I have photo evidence of this. I thank the Lord for His patience with me.
