I have the 15-22 and I'm trying to shoot in my yard without bringing too much attention to myself. I'm using CCI quiets. Obviously the gun won't cycle the rounds, and I know it's not supposed to. But I'm also noticing how bad the accuracy is. I understand it's a less powerful round, but it's off alot compared to the regular CCI I sighted rifle in with. So would I be better off buying a single shot .22LR or bolt action .22 so the lesser round power doesn't lose ummff. Don't know if I'm wording this right but thanks for any input.

What are you expecting in the way of accuracy from the 15-22? It's generally a 3-3.5 MOA rifle.

For the quietest shooting with those rounds, a bolt action is best. There are several good ones on the market, but I like the Ruger 77/22.

BTW, there is no gas system on the 15-22. It is strictly a blowback action, like almost all .22 semi-autos.

Unless you're in a banned state, just get a can and enjoy shooting rather than struggling with ammo that your rifle isn't designed to shoot.

Okay I guess all I'm trying to find out is if a Bolt Action .22 is better for shooting Sub-Sonic Quiets?? Better accuracy??

I have always heard that you shouldn't shoot subsonic rounds out of a rifle. There's the possibility of having a bullet lodge in the barrel.

No, most if not all competition shooting is done with subsonic, it is still 1050fps vs ~1250 for mini mags or hv. The quiets are around 710, still safe for rifles. Think about it, 22 short was a lot slower than subsonic long rifle loads.

The only one not advised but still used is the 20 grain Aguilla loads that don't contain gunpowder, but I've never had a problem.

Try CCI standard velocity. It cycles my Ruger 10/22 and is subsonic.

Yes that works fine in mine too, but I was just trying to use something around the 700-800 fps range to keep the noise down. Just wondering if a bolt-action would be better than a semi-auto set-up

A bolt action will be quieter & more accurate, and in this circumstance of using such low powered ammo, I would think that ammo would function better in the bolt gun. With a semi-auto, such as the 15-22, a bit of the energy from the fired round is used to cycle the action. Since that does not occur with a bolt gun, my thinking is the Quiet ammo should function better & have more velocity. No facts to back that up but seems logical to me.

I have a CZ-455 and love that bolt gun. Then, as other have stated, you can shoot ultra quiet if you get a suppressor. Nothing is quieter than a suppressed bolt action 22. The 15-22 suppressed is very quiet, however a lot of what you hear is the bolt cycling. With a bolt gun, that obviously doesn't occur and mine sounds like a pellet gun when shooting CCI Standard Velocity. On top of that, it shoots 1 MOA suppressed.

AMEN! Thanks so much sir. This is the answer I was looking for. Some of the energy being used to cycle the action takes away from the bullet. So a bolt action would be better and more quiet like my original question asked. Thanks man

You are welcome. But please consider getting a suppressor since you need to shoot ultra quiet. The Silencer Shop has the Sparrow on sale for $379 & I just ordered my second one a few weeks ago. Shooting suppressed 22lr just can't be beat. If your barrels aren't threaded, it is fast & easy to have them threaded perfectly at Adco. They have done 3 15-22 barrels for me & one for the CZ.

CCI Quiet ammo is only about 700FPS as compared to CCI Standard at about 1080FPS. There will be a difference in accuracy between these two rounds just because of the difference in velocity. The longer the distance to the target, the bigger that difference will be.
I have shot both from a 15/22, a Ruger 1022, and a Savage bolt action. The savage was the best accuracy of the 3 rifles. I was shooting at targets only about 50 feet away.
Savage Bolt action with a suppressor on it with the CCI Quiet ammo is VERY quiet. My Red Ryder BB gun makes more noise.

You might get the 15-22 to cycle on quiets, I have a 10-22 setup with a weaker bolt spring and it cycles the quiets fine. I've been wanting to check the 15-22 spring and see if I could find a lighter one for it just for fun. Just a thought...

but as far as accuracy, quiets are decent compared to the other "quiet" ammo such as CB's and Aguilla 20gr super colibra. I like them, but at 710fps I haven't tried them much out past 30 yards.

I shoot both Subs and HV/SV through both 15-22 and CZ455 both suppressed.

Lodged round? If it was going to happen it would happen. Doesn't have to be a Sub for that. Any round with a weak or poor charge could in theory get lodged.

However 30 plus years of shooting all types of ammo, Civvy and military and I have never come across that problem. I'm not saying can't just that it doesn't have to be subs that do it.

If the bore is clean and not damaged that should negate it. If it did happen, as a shooter, you should hear the difference in sound as the round is fired. Then stop and check to avoid "bulging" the barrel.

I am sure there will be other opinion on this also. This is just my experience.

Rob.

As a card carrying recoil whuss, nothing is more fun than a suppressed 22.

Try shooting subsonics thru a suppressed 77/22. A boy could get in a heap a trouble.

I shoot the CCI quiet through my old model 190 semi auto and have no problem with it cycling. The 15-22 must be a little more picky.

I like Norma TAC22.

My 5" SBR 15-22 + my newly released Sparrow + TAC22 = quieter than a pneumatic nail gun...and uncontrollable giggling like a 1st grader...

get a CZ455 bolt action rifle and enjoy shooting a one holer for a change. I have a Ruger 10-22 that is a blast for riddling empty cans, but for serious target shooting or hunting, nothing is more accurate than a finely made bolt action .22 LR. Mine is a CZ455FS with a full stock of beautifully figured walnut. It shoots as nicely as it looks. Try one.
