About 2015 I was walking through a local pawn shop when I saw a nice four inch 19-3 three for sale. Price was right. Just didn't have the money. It sat there in the shadow of plastic guns most of that Summer. Then, one Saturday, my wife up and bought it for me! Cool!!!

Shot the hound out of it with any and all .38 Special ammo I could buy at WalMart. Then, life happened. Trigger show a slight tendency to push off.
Hand had three pins. One broke off. Started looking for a replacement. Not cheap. Oh well. Had to just set it aside.

Early this year, got 2nd dose of Covid. This time ... really tough. Still got some respiratory problems. Bored. Decided to fix the pistol! Found and purchased a as new hand from one of our board members. As well one of our board members contacted me offering a nice trigger/hammer that was needed. End result ... got myself busy fixing the revolver!

Got myself some screwdrivers which I fitted to the screws and off came the sideplate. I fiddled around with all the parts gently removing/reinstalling each so that I became familiar with how they fit and functioned. First, installed the hand. All seemed fine. Hold the gun level or muzzle down ... worked as expected. Hold the gun muzzle up, no function. Could not figure out what was wrong.

Trigger and hammer arrived this past week. Happy! Happy! Happy! Dropped right into place. Functioned perfectly. No push off or anything else remotely problematic. Still ... could not figure out how why the new hand didn't seem to work. Thought about it real hard yesterday afternoon. Sick as a dog so couldn't do much. Had plenty of time on my hands. Watched lots of YouTube videos. One fellow said something about not fiddling more than necessary w/ a hand when installing a trigger, said there was a little spring that was aggravating to get in place. Got to looking at the old trigger and new trigger. Vola! I found my problem. Of course most of you already know what I had just learned.

Aggravating could have been the word to use. I prefer ... a learning experience. Fiddled around with a nice little screwdriver to get the spring out of the way for the pin on the hand. Got it together! Happy! Installed in the frame and presto!!! Everything works beautifully! Thrilled!

So ... what is the outcome? First timing is spot on target. In DA the bolt, etc. locks up before the trigger breaks. In SA, everything locks up before the hammer is in cock. Cylinder has virtually no movement either side to side or forward to rear (which was never an issue).

Now all I have to do is replace the rear sight blade (bent) and get a decent set of Pachmayr grips since the ones that came on the revolver are just to slick to be of real use.

Best of all, I can now sit here on the couch and rest while fiddling with this 19-3 and a four inch 66-2 that I bought in better times when trading and such stuff was easier done.

Hope and pray this has not been boring for everyone. Just been a while since felt like anything. Very happy to have this revolver fixed. My wife has just handed me biscuit and bacon for breakfast. Coffee will be ready shortly. Sincerely. bruce.

Sorry to hear about the rough times. Hope you get back to 100% soon. I’ve made a few minor repairs on neglected S&Ws over the years. Always nice to see them back in action again. :) One of my favorites was way beyond my ability and it seemed “worth it” to get the work done professionally, by a real master that knows what he is doing. The finished product turned out beautifully. Of course it wasn’t worth it, when judged just by the numbers. The numbers would say I should have just returned the gun and took the loss of the shipping money, but it was worth it to me. ;)

Don’t leave us hanging

Well!!??

How were the biscuits and bacon?

Seriously you’ll love your 19-3
Got one at a gun show awhile back with awesome Herrett Jordan grips

Next step that took a few years was to find a reasonable price 18 understudy along with some Herrett’s - same feel and heft, little bit different trigger but great pairing

Apologize for not replying. Have been having some real problems breathing, etc. Coughed so hard last night I thought I could taste my left lung. Gag.

The biscuits and bacon were excellent. Hazel and I were married on 8/4/79. We moved to New Orleans where I enrolled in seminary. Our first night in the city, she cooked our first meal ... biscuits and bacon!!! Oh, and sweet iced tea! She is the gift of God to this descendant of Adam's line! Thank God for her!

Hazel is a very competent registered nurse. She has just informed me that I will not be staying up tonight watching tv, etc. Looks like I'll have to call it a night when the sun goes down. God bless you all. Sincerely. bruce.

God is pro-life! Therefore, I live! My lungs have tooth marks as that is all that kept them from flying across the room while I was coughing. But, this morning, at least I woke up. Took a handful of pills. Drank the first of the coffee. And ... my precious grandson has arrived to cheer me up until his dentist appointment. Hazel is about to make biscuits and sausage for breakfast!!! Just enough time for me to take a breathing treatment. It's going to be a good day! The range will have to wait as there is no way I drive up there and do any shooting. They would take one look at me and call 911 for an ambulance. I look like something the cat drug in. Sincerely. bruce.

brucev, post was is jest, your health is the important issue. Pics of 19 would be nice along with the removed parts.
I’m hesitant to go to the range with my spine since the Jan fusion failed, maybe 22s?

Bruce, thanks for taking the time to share your experiences, and good taste in guns! (Hint: pictures! ;))

Sometimes a project can have recuperative powers when we're not feeling well.
Hopefully, you'll be feeling better soon!

Take care!!

Get Well Soon1

Hazel? You lucky Duck. I got me one of those at Bible College, too. I am not worthy of her...
I would love to see a photo of the 19-3 if you would?

Prayers up!

A bacon and biscuit picture would be nice too.
Idea: bacon/biscuit/gun in the same picture! 😁

Sometimes its not so much a mistake as it is a learning experience. You will never let that stump you very long again and if you ever come across a used gun cheap because the cylinder doesn't rotate you can get it cheap knowing the problem.

Bought a cheap Ruger Blackhawk .357 from a guy who worked with my father-in-law. The guy had shot so many lead .357 Mag bullets through the gun that the rifling was gone due to lead build up.

Paid around $100.00 for the gun. Got it home and used a Lewis lead remover on the barrel plus lots of scrubbing with Hoppes and brass brush. When I was finished the barrel was pristine.:D

Greyman, are you going to have more surgery to fix the problem?
I have had 4 lower back surgeries due to ruptured discs.

One disc was completely removed and an artificial disc put in. I have also had plates and screws put on my spine. All surgeries were a complete success thankfully.
I sincerely hope you get your situation resolved.

Here in the JAX area there has been a BIG shake up with the old best hospital. Most good Mds and many nurses have left. I called last year this time of year to get appointment with surgeon that did my first fusion, C-4-C- 6 to fix C-3.Was told in a “ snotty tone”by some female that he was leaving the group and was going to Mayo in Wisconsin. What a bummer. Was at my Ortho group for another problem with “ arthur” and mentioned my new spine issue. Was told the Ortho group has an excellent surgeon that did that surgery. Well have had perfect care, surgery and PT from this group so I said, why not and got appointment. Had the surgery last Jan.at one of the problem hospitals( was leery ) but surgery seemed to be perfect. Complied with all the restrictions and follow ups. Sometime in August started having pain in lower neck and shoulders. Since first surgeon said all my C sections would have to be fused I thought it was C-7. Finally went to back Ortho surgeon as the surgeon that did my Jan. surgery had left the practice. They naturally took x- rays and the C-3-C-4 fusion had “ failed”. Actually pieces and screws jsut hanging in my neck. The surgeon suggested bone growth stimulator and PT! What a joke! Showed x-rays to my primary care, he immediately sent me for more x-rays and MRI. I then learned my first surgeon was not at Mayo in Wisconsin but Here In Jax. Primary Md. referred me to him as I am prior patient. Earliest appointment is in Feb.!!!!!! Sort of scared to shoot or do any extensive activities as have no idea how bad it is.
Thanks for asking.
