I am in Vancovuer, BC, Canada.

I received a letter from RCMP stating I can't use the 25rd mag anymore due to new laws. I bought the M&P 1522 because I like the 25rd capacity and I also have 4 mags.

RCMP gave me 3 options.
1) destroy them.
2) modify them to hold 10 rds
3) ship back to S&W to swap for 10rd mags (me paying shipping)

I think opton 2 is best, please let me know whats the best way to modify. And if law changes back, can I easily undo the mods ? Do I have to show any authorities that I did the mods ? I have 40 days to let the RCMP know what option I chose. This really makes me mad

I would suggest you read that new law very carfully. Most of the time any mod to a magazine must be pretty darn near permanent. We have states that a flash hider must be welded in place. It can be done in a way that can be later removed but it's not an easy task and involves the destruction of parts and possible damage to the barrel. My heart goes out to all of us that are getting further government incursion into our hobby. I hope you figure this one out. My initial thought is it may be better to pay the shipping and get the low cap mags. In the future if the law is able to change for the better you can always find the 25's again. And to be honest, I don't see this one rifle getting suddenly unpopular anytime soon. I think you will be able to buy those mags for a long time.

Did you do a search on this forum? I thought I saw someone post on how to convert a 25 rd mag to 10 rd.

I am no law expert and I can only guess as to what is accepted.
If you put the restrictor in and rivet the floor plate on you have a pretty permanent fix. If they ever change the law you can drill the rivet out, remove the restrictor and be back in business.
They may want you to epoxy the floor plate, and then rivet. I really do not know.
You might want to take the pieces in and see what they want you to do, or just do what you think is right and see if it passes muster with the RCMP.
You don't need to do anything to the followers. The only thing removed is the bowtie looking piece that goes inside the spring and keeps the floor plate in place.
Good luck

This has happened with the hi cap pistol magazines as well.

Have you contacted MD Charlton the S&W reps to see what they suggest or one of the local stores like Wanstall's or Reliable they may already have modified a few or have something else in place.

However, if your chosen course is modification to the existing magazines then usually a rivet (or in the case of metal magazines) a dent in the body of the magazine that limits the movement of the follower so that only 10 rounds can be loaded is enough.

In the case of your 15-22 magazine a rivet in the body of the magazine would satisfy.

The magazine limiters shown on the ebay ad look very professional and if the limiter were riveted on to the floorplate that may satisfy, don't forget the section that says something to the effect - ' so that it can not be easily converted back to high capacity'. Some people have interpreted that to mean that the change has to be made to the magazine body.

A rivet or a dent have been deemed acceptable other types of modification may or may not be acceptable.

The letter you have received has given you choices but no instructions so that at the moment you are under no obligation to report or produce anything, however, when you reply with your choice they then may instruct/request some form of proof maybe through an official verifier (who knows) if you have chosen to modify then once it is done you are legal the rest is simply beauocracy.

Canadian Gun Nutz may have some ideas just don't listen to the hot heads who tell you not to comply, it's not worth the potential fuss.

A fellow Canadian,
NB
