SUPER DUPER RANT - OPTIMUM

I would probably had not paid it. After a few letters the company would probably have dropped it. If they turn it over to a bill collector, so what? Just ignore them, especially if you are moving to somewhere else.

Back in '76 during my first ever trip to FL, three of us drove down, nonstop.

My friend got a speeder as soon as he crossed the GA border, one in Ft Lauderdale, and another in Hollywood Fl.

Three tickets in one week.

We left and drove back to NY. He gets a letter in the mail a month or so later saying he would be subject to arrest if he ever came back to FL.

He now lives in Orlando :D I'm going to visit in two weeks.

I think today might be tougher as the DMV's eat cheese with other states.

I would not pay it. What are they going to do? Shut off your service? Congrats on leaving that slave state. I'm jealous. I'd move out of Mass in a (New York) minuet if I could.

Had Direc TV Discontinued service they billed me for the out of date boxes they had replaced. So I sent the old ones that THEY REMOVED. Sent EVERYTHING... remotes etc etc. Then I got a bill for the satellite dish itself. When I told a stupidvisor that they could come and take it off the roof. SHE said we don't send our people on a roof to retrieve the dish. I told her that DTV put it up there so they could come and get it. Sent me a bill for 2 years. Gave it to a bill collector I ignored rhem too. Been 4 1/2 years and I just got another bill from a collection agency. Called them and told them I was not going to pay the bill for the dish that DTV would not remove. Also told the person that said they would ruin my credit. Told them they could come and get the dish off the roof that DTV wouldn't and I'd just call us even. We use credit cards for most purchases and pay the bill in full Doubt my credit is bad... but I reduced my credit line on a card from 30 grand to 8 grand.. It actually can affect credit scores. But at my age I just don't give a darn

Don't take them to court. As plaintiff, you have to prove your case. Refuse to pay the bill and make them take you to court and prove their case. They may not do anything at all.
But DO file an Answer to their Complaint in a timely manner.
And DO answer their Request for Admissions.
Fail to do those things and you've automatically lost, regardless of the facts.

Some of you were spot on and apparently it is hidden in the original contract. How many here actually read (and understand) all the legalese on these service agreements we all sign. Legal or not, contract or not, I think doing this to customers is despicable!

I did pay the $218 and took the hosing because these days it is quite important to maintain a high credit score. A lower credit score affects many aspects of our lives including insurance rates etc. Since I am about to move into a new home in a new State I decided it just wasn't worth the hassle and possible annoyance of them constantly calling and mailing me threats. Even though I still think they are scum of the earth for this, I guess I already knew that. So yes, although I think I'm in the right, I did pay their extortion.

I've never had cable/satellite TV, so I have no idea how much money you're talking about.

Care to say???

$218.00 (but shouldn't matter) - but more the fact they they are simply HOSING customers for services NOT rendered! Should not be legal!!

Bad credit reports in one state follows you everywhere.

Write your congressman........may help and it may make you feel better that you have tried to do something about it.

Once your trains are setup in the new locale, it'll fade from memory.
On the other hand, NYC and NYS Transfer Taxes really sting. Ouch!

Read your contract carefully-you may very well have grounds for a nice class action-however the only one who is gonna be happy is your attorney. As a class representative you will get a couple of thousand for being the named plaintiff, but your damages are de minimis (2 days) so other than making your attorney happy and proving a point, all you are doing in the great sceme of things is wrestling with the pig.

If you really want to pursue this, a careful review of your contract would be the first step. I would be looking hard for a litigation waiver in favor of arbitration. If you are entitled to litigate, small claims court is a likely path and a consumer friendly venue. Cable companies have seen it all and are likely ready to defend themselves from this issue if they are contractually right.
