Suppressors

To keep from damaging your hearing and the hearing of anyone else in your proximity. Especially if you have to use it in a home defense situation indoors. I'm thinking of an AR application. Also, a suppressed .22 is cool to knock out those pesky varmints without disturbing the neighbors.

I've always figured that if you have neighbors close enough to be disturbed by a .22, you probably shouldn't be shooting in the first place. It may even be illegal depending on local law/regulations.

Maybe. Growing up in Alaska, it was common for someone to pop a critter in the front yard. And it bothered nobody. But it might have been a little more considerate if the gun was suppressed.

Here in the greater Seattle area, yes someone would call the police.
 
Simply more pleasant to shoot from a noise/muzzle blast standpoint, particularly rifles. Plus the coolness factor.

And you should move to another county, that law is retarded.
 
Dumb question. I can't think of a reason I NEED just about anything I own. I'm single. I don't NEED a 3-bedroom house. I don't NEED two trucks. I don't NEED more than one pistol. I don't NEED a computer and the internet - I got along for years without one.

You NEED food, clothing and a roof over your head. Anything else is a want.

Besides coolness... in no particular order.


Get a proper cheek weld on an AR without muffs banging into the stock.
Helps keep from giving away your position (even when shooting with supersonic ammo)
Easier to communicate during fire.
Critters will sometimes not scatter and wait patiently as others fall over.
Teaching young kids to shoot.
It is simply far more pleasant to shoot without hearing protection.
Makes wife happy.
How else can you tell if the can you hit is aluminum or tin, or hear a bullet hit the ground then tumble away in a buzz?
And if you're at a shooting range with others... it's just being polite. :D

I haven't got the can for my Rem 700SPS .308 yet, but I soon will. If the stuff ever does hit the fan... I'm going stealth.

Take away food shelter & medicine and most of our other purchases have absolutely nothing to do with "need". Speaking of which I feel the "need" coming on for some new fishing tackle so I can harvest some free protien. :D
 
Few things are more enjoyable than a quality, suppressed .22 rimfire. I have a lot of suppressors and enjoy them all, but I have to say an integrally suppressed Ruger 77/22 is a fantastic little rifle, which I probably why I have three of them, two SWR's and an AWC. Great little rifles!!!!
 
It keeps the other critters from spooking.

Suppressed weapons are easier on your hearing.

It's considerate of others to muffle the gun, just as it is to have a muffler on a car.

It is impossible to realize how much you will like suppression until you try it. In my opinion the most useful of all is a suppressed .22 rifle. I love my Operative B Integral:

Though I could get by with a screw on can like the one I have on my Buckmark right now. It sometimes finds it's way on to a few other guns.

Thanks for a great post. If the governess in this state signs the bill, I'll be putting one on my M&P 15-22.
 
I've never understood this notion that there is something criminal about suppressors. What is so 'evil' about them? Makes about much sense as demonizing rifles with pistol grip stocks and bayonet lugs.

I've also never understood why some people think they are entitled to pass judgment on others "needs".
 
Want one versus need on... hmmm... I want two! One for my 700 SPS .308 and one for the .22 pistol. What kind do I want? Someone please enlighten me. What am I looking for?
 
One of the big reasons suppressors (silencers) first came out was in fact for hunting. Hiram Maxim was one of the big sellers of the early models. I used to have an ad from the 1920's of Maxim's with a supressed Model 94 Winchester. After the Firearms Act of 1934, they really became tools for the military, and really have stayed in that elusive area where they are seen as the tools for hitmen and special agents.

Yeah... there's a ton of info about rimfire cans, and I spent a fair amount of time reading. What I learned is not much.-- Most folks want a rimfire can that can be taken apart for cleaning. Lots of talk about baffle design that I didn't quite understand and I'm not sure that many who were talking about baffle design knew much either. Size/volume matters (I understood that).

I decided on a YHM Wraith. Mid-priced can, larger volume at 1.25'' diameter compared to most 1'' cans, sealed, reputable company.

I didn't want to put a skinny 1'' can on the end of the 15-22 cuz it just doesn't look right to me. The larger 1.25'' seems to be pretty quiet with a lower tone than the 'tink' of some 1'' cans. That said, the actions on the 15-22 and my Sig522 are significantly louder than any audible shot report so I think that pretty much any rimfire can will serve the purpose on an auto loader regardless of noise suppression specs. Since I don't use open sights on my Ruger pistol the larger diameter wasn't an issue. Not many people talk about the Wraith so I don't think it is very popular. I visited Dave at Liberty Suppressor and he doesn't seem to think much of the YHM rimfire cans. He showed me a worn out YHM baffle that he retrofitted with his own. I was shooting last week with a guy who had a Liberty Kodiak. His two shooting buddies mentioned that mine sounded quieter. The owner of the Kodiak made no comment. Both seemed quiet enough to me (Both are rated by the respective manufacturers at 40db reduction). Seems to be more subjective than actual measured specs with these things.

I was concerned about cleaning a sealed can but that hasn't been an issue so far. I've put over 2k rounds through the Wraith. It weighed 5oz new and weighs about the same now. I stole my wife's single stem flower vase and soak it in mineral spirits over night. I'm told that YHM is good about servicing the cans if needed but that's something I'll find out down the road.

I'm going to SBR the 15-22 cuz it's a bit long with the can.
