It wasn't only westerns. Many started out in shows like FBI, Manix, Rout 66, 77 Sunset Strip, etc. I enjoy seeing them way back then.
Don't forget "The Untouchables."
Jethro's dad, Max Baer Sr. was Heavy Weight Champ back in the '30s. Jethro wasn't as dumb as he looked.
One of the best examples of this was 'Colombo'. Major stars of the era loved to do this show just to match wits with Colombo. It was easy to see that the guest murderers relished the challenge. Great actors bring out the best in each other.
And of course if anyone ever owned a role, it was Peter Falk.
