Hi everyone...I'm new here and maybe this question has been answered before. I haven;t purchased a gun yet...I live in Illinois and am waiting to get my FOID and will then be applying for a concealed license. I have a Nissan X-terra and according to the law I have to store my weapon in the trunk of my vehicle but SUV's don't have "trunks" per se, just open spaces in the back. So, where do I store my weapon? Can't I just carry it on my person when I travel in the SUV? I appreciate any help on this....just want to do everything legally and responsibly.

Please note that I am not a lawyer(yet), and not an Illinois resident. That being said, my understanding of your law is this:it has to be in a locked container. That doesn't have to be a trunk, it can be a lockbox or a lockable glovebox etc.

Also not a lawyer, did stay recently in a Holiday Express, and most important of all- also a Nissan Xterra owner.

If one has a concealed carry permit, can you not have the gun on your person. Here in MA the problem arises when you exit the vehicle and enter one of the many "forbidden zones" such as a bank or court house etc. As an SUV owner, I too question how I am to leave the gun locked in my trunk when I don't have one.

Seems to me that if I were a bad person, carrying the gun into the bank or the court house isn't the only law that will be broken.

If it were me (I don't live in IL) I'd contact the local PD since that's who you'll most likely be dealing with. Get in touch w/the watch commander (lieutenant) and ask the question of him/her. Their troops should have had training on the law.

Unfortunately, I could not disagree with you more. Although you are correct that you might be dealing with local police officers if you violate any laws, they do not always know the letter of the law.

When I first applied for my LTC in my home town in MA, (more years ago than I wish to count) the Sgt. in charge initially refused to give me an application stating that MA law stated that the Chief "may" issue a license to carry but didn't have to. I, the 20 something year old non LEO or lawyer, advised the Sgt. that the Chief "may" in fact not issue me a license, however, he could not deny me the right to apply. He subsequently gave me an application.

Had I listened to him and walked away, I would not be the holder of a MA LTC A (large capacity) for the last 40+ years.

As long as it's in a case and unloaded. The case has to completely enclose the firearm and have some method of closing it such as tie, zipper, snap, etc. As long as you meet that you're good to go until your CCW arrives.

I picked up one of those small lock boxes that fasten under the seat with a cable. I only use it when going into a restricted building. Hey, it keeps the honest person honest!!

No you understand incorrectly.
Read the OP's initial post. He doesn't have his CCW yet. In fact, no one in IL has a CCW yet. The first CCWs in IL won't be issued for about a month.

In MA, I believe that if you need to leave your carry gun in the vehicle when going into a school, post office, court building, etc., you can use a gun safe that locks. The gun needs to be unloaded and the bullets can't be in the same container as the gun. I remove the magazine and bullet from the chamber, lock them in the glove box and put the gun into a locked gun box that is under the seat.
