Having said that, I love my 640-1 and yes it definately barks loudly when I shoot full house factory .357 mags out of it. I settled on 135 gr. Speer Gold Dot JHPs made specifically for short barreled revolvers. Less flash, and the lighter bullet means less felt recoil.

My .357 640 is my everyday carry IWB in a low-riding DeSantis Insider that puts the grip at the beltline. So comfy (AND comforting) I often forget it's there. I supplement its 5 in the tubes with two speedloaders in a cell phone case.

Not that he needs me explaning things for him, but robotoid is simply stating that the heavier weight of the SS J-frame tames the recoil of a .357 magnum better than a lightweight/airweight, scandium framed revolver handles .38 specials. Get it?

The 640-1 is among my most revered and valued S&W's, so much so that I bought a duplicate, just in case. Nothing finer for close quarters instant defense capability when carried in a coat pocket. You can be ready to fire instantly right through the coat, if necessary. The "surprise that saves". Handles Silvertip 145grainers comfortably... and that's a very effective load. 158 gr. Gold Dots in the winter time. The Pachmayr grips are magnificent in soaking up recoil... awesome grips with this gun!

Forget 125 grainers... they're too brutal for a small gun. And there are other defense ammo choices which are comparable with much less recoil and not so hard on the gun. (Top choices include Silvertip 145gr., 135 gr. Gold Dot, 158 gr. GoldDot).

Howdy, Beechwood...
I have both the 640-3 and the 340PD. The 640 is a night-stand gun and the 340PD gets carried daily. Speer 135 gr GDHP for short-barrels in .38SPL+P is what I stoke them with. The 640 will soon wear CrimsonTrace grips. You will find your 640 fulfills yer needs.....good shooting......

You guys (are there any gals here?) are saying too many nice things about this gun. Now I am just itchin' to get out to the range and throw some lead. Hopefully another week or less before I get some range time. Today I snuck away from the job looking for and buying another Rem. 870. Thats another story for another day.

Knuckles, why, if I may ask, did you give up on the sp101. That seems like a worthy gun. Can the 640 be too much better?

I know you asked Knuckles this question, and I am sure he will reply with his own personal reason, but in general, the SP-101 is a bit larger and heavier than the 640-1. The 640-1 is somewhat easier to conceal.

+1 on:

640s are great - I've got one too.

For self defense, use the short barrel rounds from either Speer or Buffalo Bore. If you use regular rounds, you're turning your nice little pistol into a flame shooting, solid fuel rocket that's pushing back into your hand long after the bullet has departed. For practice, not a big deal.

Some other comments.

1. a 640 no-dash is a .38 special only, only the -1 and up are for .357 magnum as well. They've got longer cylinders and a longer barrel.

2. Someone posted a nice video of Jerry Miculek giving tips on shooting various revolvers. He recommended wrapping the thumb of your weakside hand around the back of the revolver, rather than putting it next to the other thumb. I tried it, and it really helps me. Just don't do it with a semi-auto.

He also had some other recommendations. I found the ones about where to put your trigger finger, and about indexing also very useful. It made a real qualitative improvement in my snubbie shooting.

I can finally get that ragged hole that everybody talks about. Of course it's at about 9 feet, but that's good for me.

Oh, and for cheap practice (at least once it's paid for), consider a model 63 or 36 - 22 LR snubbies.
