Im looking to buy 22 cal. Rev. I can't
Find the m63. I don't even know
What the m stands for?
I want the gun just for target shooting.
I read on this fourm that the 3 in. Barrel
Shoots better then the longer barrel.
Can you help me pick a SW 22 Revoler.
I like the fiber opt front sites. I would
Like to be able to get the wood handle
That has the cut out, finger grove.

Did you check on gunbroker.com? I was just looking at them there. Search for 63 not m63. The "m" stands for model. There are a few options for Smith .22LR revolvers. Theres the model 63, the 317 Kit Gun, the 617, and the model 34. These can all be found on gunbroker.com or other auction site.

S&W still makes the model 63. It's listed on the web-site catalog here:

The "m" stands for "model".

There are after-market "wood" grips available, or the old S&W round-butt J-frame grips will fit.

My LGS is a small location but does a huge business.

I purchased the S&W Model 63 3 Inch barrel (8 shot J Frame) last year in November. I had to wait 2 months after ordering it, so I guess it is one model that you won't see just laying around in a showcase very long. If you don't mind the added weight, check out the S&W 617 4 inch barrel.

I also purchased a Ruger SP101 .22 4 inch barrel (8 shot) that I like very much. The Ruger trigger pull and hammer cocking is something you have to adapt to compared to the S&W's which dominate in that area.

It is difficult making a choice, what I like he or you may not like.

Wood grips are available for mostly all models, just google
S&W J Frame Grips etc.

Good luck finding that .22, I think it is a must have no matter what brand or model you select.

Ruger SP 101. He had one on order for
A month and the guy backed out. I
Paid $550. Im happy with that.
I did lots of reading and spoke to two
Guys that had the SW 63 and they all
Had problems with removing the 22
Ammo after shooting 50 or more rounds.
The gun got so hot that the ammo was
Sticking and hard to remove.

The "m" stands for model, as in Model 63.

It has been made in 2, 3, 4 and 5 inch barrels, the most recent one offered in the factory catalog being the 3 inch barrel.

The 2013 S&W catalog says that SKU number 162634 is currently offered. It has a 3 inch barrel, fiber optic front sight and enclosed ejector.

for target shooting, you should consider the Gold Standard Revolver.

A Model 17 ('m" stand for Model) in 6" better known as the K22 Masterpiece.

I lucked onto an older Model 18 which is the 4" six shot w/adjustable sights. The gun is accurate far beyond my meager abilities and is one of my favorite range guns. They tend to be pricey but if you can find one you'll be well served.

To give you some perspective on the size difference between a 3" 63 & 4" 617, here are my 5" 63 (Dropped several years ago.), 4" 617, and 3" 63 (Replaced the 5" 63 several years ago.):

All have added wooden grips, while only the 3" 63 came with the fiber optic front sight. The 4.2" SP-101 in .22LR is a nice revolver - you'll enjoy it. I was able to A-B a new one 11/11 a friend had at the range with my 3" 63. I left the experience happy to have my 3" 63. I've never had extraction - or reloading - problems with any of my S&W rimfire revolvers - until I shoot the hot and nasty CCI Stingers in them. A few cylinders full and get out the cleaning rod, swipes, Hoppes #9, & chamber brush! Seriously, a full box (50) of Stingers will never be shot in one range trip - and likely even a cylinder or two will make it difficult to shoot other ammo. It took several range trips, but I've shot over a brick (550 rounds!) of Federal el-cheapo 36gr plated HPs from my 3" 63 between cleanings. Vanity won me over then - the little revolver was nasty! .22 rimfire firearms are ammo-sensitive.
