Hello,

I own a Smith and Wesson Model 39, sn 36512.

Any information as to when and where the pistol was made would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

They started at 1001 in 1954 and ended with 115000 in 1970. They started with the A prefix in in 1970. If I were to give it a WAG I would GUESS at 1958-59 but that really is a WAG (wild-*** guess). I am confident somebody who KNOWS will jump in soon.

Hi GI Dave,
It's hard to say for sure when the gun made as guns are tracked by shipping date and not when manufactured. This is further confusing as S&W didn't ship guns out in numeric order or by or serial numbers. Taking this into consideration, S/N 36500 was shipped in December 1962 so 36512 might be around the same time.

Hi GI Dave, I agree with cougar015 about that likely production date.

Good information if you are not too familiar with the S&W Model 39 is that a large change was made to these pistols in/around 1970 where the extractor was redesigned.

The original 39 no dash like you have earned a reputation for extractor breakage enough so that they redesigned the part entirely.

Care should be taken to preserve your extractor as finding the replacement part can be very difficult. The very best thing you can do is to be vigilant and always strip rounds from the magazine only — NEVER drop the slide on an already-chambered round.
