My first post here, I am so grateful for any help!

So, an aunt just emailed me that she wants to send me her SW Model 34-1 .22LR as a gift from out of State into California.

The serial number is M2020XX

The ATF seems to think this gun needs to be 50 years old to qualify. I am not sure how to prove the age to convince an FFL to accept the transfer.

Anyone have a date for this gun and a way I could prove it to a local FFL?

Thanks for any advice!

Please remove the stocks and check the bottom of the grip frame. That is where the serial number is. Then post the first 4 digits and we can help.

The number you posted is probably not the serial number, which might start with a letter, like an "M"

You were right!

Here is the serial from the grip: M2020XX

I checked the S&W Catalog 3rd edition and the Model 34-1 in question looks to have been shipped in 1982 based on the serial number provided. That sounds right as the barrel is not pinned according to the photos - a feature eliminated around 1982.

I have #M1907XX, which shipped March 1982, so yours would have shipped later that same year. That's only about 34 years, so it will need to be shipped to an FFL.

H RICHARD is correct, the serial number range for 1982 is M193101-M219800. To be classified as a relic it has to be at lease 50 years old. It would have to have been manufactured in 66 or earlier. I have a Federal License and California Certificate of Eligibility to purchase curios and relics and recently had to pass on a real nice model 63 from Kansas because it didn't meet the criteria for age.
