I bought a used model 57 with a 6" barrel 20 years ago at a gun show. This revolver has a pinned barrel and counterbored cylinder. The bluing almost looks like black chrome. When did SW quit pinning and counter boring cylinders. It's a real beauty. It was much nicer looking than the new ones at the time.
Don't shoot it much anymore, but may start again!

They stopped pinning and recessing them in 1982.
The M57s are great revolvers. I have a 4" one that is P&R and love it. They're getting harder to find these days, as is ammo.
We'd like to see a picture.

Hope i'm not hijacking, but instead of starting another thread; I thought I might get an answer to my question here.

I have a Mod.57 nickle 6in. no dash sn #6484XX. there are 4 digits and the letter and numbers A20 on the crane??? can someone tell me what those letters and numbers represent?

Thanks in advance

Steve

Serial number should begin with S or N.

If it's N6484XX, then 1980.

Don't know about A20, but the other digits are assembly numbers.

Check the crane numbers against any stampings you find on the gripframe.

I know what you mean when you say "black chrome" my six inch 57 appears to have the highest polish before bluing of any Smith I own.
