I have an older (2009?) SW1911Sc that came with a pair of 7 round magazines. Since this is a "Commander" style 1911, will it accept 8 round magazines like the newer round butt SW1911Sc guns? I have added a picture of the gun below. Thank you for any responses!

It will take any magazine designed for the Government/Commander models. It will not accept the shorter Officer's Model/Defender type magazines as the frame is too long to allow those to fully seat. Basically, if it works in the Colt Government or Commander, it will work in your pistol.

The magazines supplied with your pistol by S&W were most likely made by ACT Mag, who also makes, or used to make, not sure which, magazines for Novak.

WARNING: There was some discussion about NOT using the Chip McCormick type follower in the Scandium frame as some believe the unique follower in that 8 round magazine will chew up the inside of the scandium frame. Chip McCormick magazines as well as other magazines use this follower, so you may want to investigate this. The attached picture shows the McCormick follower on the lower right.

Correct, the two mags that came with the gun are ACT Mags. I had read something about the McCormick mags but have not seen any locally. The few that are for sale locally seem to be "generic" Colt "style" mags. They are all 8 round mags, which is why I asked if I could use them or not.

Thank you both for your replies!

Wilson Combat Elite Tactical 8 round magazines should fit and function just fine. You can find them online at Brownells.

I found one of these at a gun store locally. While it technically "fits" in that it latches into place like the ACT Mags that came with the gun, it doesn't "fit" in the fact that it hangs down 1.5"-2" lower than the butt of the pistol. I'm sure it will work just fine for target practice but in a real world concealed carry situation the magazine will snag on clothes.

There was a "generic" 7 round magazine for sale, but it didn't have a brand name, just a white sticker that read "7 round 1911 magazine". It didn't look to be a quality piece. I checked the Smith & Wesson website store and they do not offer a 7 round magazine for sale, so I will have to do some searching online to see what I can come up with.

I ordered a couple of 7 round magazines made by Nighthawk Customs from Brownell's. I'll see how those fit when I get them.

Milly - I may be wrong, but judging from your picture, your gun has a shorter then standard frame - Officers length. Commanders used the full size frame with a shorter barrel / slide. That could be why your new Wilson magazine extends so far below the grip. It may take 6 or 7 shot Officers magazines for a flush fit...

I think you're right. It came with 7 round mags. Brownell's listed the 7 round mags for "standard" and "officers" models, and listed the 8 round mags just for "standard" models.

All of the articles I read about 1911's call the 4.5" barrel models (which this gun has) "Commander" and the 5" barrel models "full size" or "standard". Very rarely do any of them talk about "Officers" models. Who would have thought a firearm platform that is over 100 years old would be this confusing? LOL

In case anyone wants to know, I got my Nighthawk Custom 7 round mags from Brownell's in the mail today. I opened them up and found that they are actually ACT Mags with "Nighthawk Custom" on them. They are identical to the ACT Mags that came with the gun. Now I know where to get them in the future.

I use Elite 8 round magazines in my 1911SC. Work great, and it appears that Brownells house magazine is also made by Elite. The two mags that came with the gun work well too--one is 7 round and the other is 8.

I can't respond on the older model but my round butt 1911sc will fit flush with the 7 rounds that came with it, both S&W and McCormick 8 rounds. The McCormick 10 rounders fit flush as they do in a full size but of course protrude by the length of the extra round plastic base.
