I have a mod 29-2 with a 6 inch barrel. I would like to have the barrel swapped out to a 4 inch barrel. The gun is a shooter in ok condition so its not a collectors piece. Will S & W do this type of work?

For the longest time I wanted a model 29 with the 8" barrel. I thought they were the greatest of all.

Then one day in a gun shop I picked one up and handled it. And so ended my lust for the 8" version.

I like the 29 with a 6" barrel although I also have a 4".

I have another 29-2 with a 4 inch barrel and I like shooting it better, but its a very nice nickle gun that I dont want to carry in a holser. I guess I just need to look for a 4 inch barrel to buy.

I'd be more prone to carry the nickel gun rather then blue. Nickel is a tough finish, that's why it was used.

The blueing on S&W revolvers doesn't hold up to anything.

I just got my 29-6, back from smith I sent them a 6 1/2 inch bbl I bought from a forum member and had them take the 6 inch off and put the 6 1/2 on, so now I have the updated version with the strengthening of the newer smiths and the 6 1/2 inch of the older ones. The best of both worlds.

I know the nickel is a tough finnish, but I could forgive myself if I messed up the finnish on it. Still wonder why I shot it after I bought it.

I been carrying and shooting nickel Smiths for over 25 years. The finishes is still fine. You won't hurt it. My 4" nickel 29-2 has ridden many a mile in a holster through all kinds of weather. Still looks like new when wiped off. Same for my 19/586/18 etc..

Would Smith and Wesson cut an 8&3/8 inch down to a 5 or 6 inch and resight it if you sent it to them.

Why not just have the barrel cut back to 4" by a gunsmith? Cost is about the same as rebarreling. Had my 8 3/8" full lug barrel on my Model 29 cut back to 6", no problems.

If you're reluctant to do this, check Numrich (Gun Parts Corpopration) as they often have S & W barrels.
